Does wearing a hat or cap make a man's hair thin or fall out?
Most men, that I have talked to with thinning hair, tell me that wearing a cap or hat is the reason for their hair loss. At first, I agreed with them, until my wife said to me, “honey, you have worn police hats and motorcycle helmets for many years and you still have a head full of hair. I don’t agree with that reason, at all”. I do believe she is correct. Question: so, what makes some men and women lose their hair faster than other people? Are caps and hats the reason or is it something else?

Your wife is correct. Wearing hats in any form are not a cause for hair to thin or fall out. From what I’ve read, the main cause is due to hormonal changes. Some hormonal changes may be genetically caused, but we all go through various hormonal changes in our lives.
Of course, there are many other factors that can cause hair loss. Here is a list put together by the Mayo Clinic.
It’s in the genes JP, not the hat.
I think it has to do with high testosterone levels. When I was in school, I wore a hat day in and day out for 6 years, and I have had girls tell me they are jealous of my thick hair. So, at least from my point of view we can eliminate hats and hair gel as a cause.
wannabe, in the genes and not the hat? I still have a good pair of Wrangler’s. Think I will search for them. Thanks.
If your hair is in your jeans and not your hat, it’s done some serious migrating…
It’s definitely not anything to do with wearing hats. My dad has worn caps for decades, and at the age of 74 he still has a full head of thick hair.
Conversely, I would imagine the wearing of hats to be the result of thinning hair…
