Dear dietitian and nutritionist, what is the healthiest diet one can have while traveling?

Asked by sunyata_rakshasa (350points) August 16th, 2011

I am about to embark on a backpacking adventure around Big Island Hawaii. I have about $300 a month to spend on food. What would be a good set of staples to be carrying with me? Are there forums or communities online that i can discuss this with in further detail? Thanks a million in advance. Love this community, and the information we share. Namaste.

I’d start here (ie go where the best evidence points with respect to a healthy diet),

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/pyramid-full-story/index.html

and modify accordingly with respect to energy needs (ie if you’re hiking a great deal…peanuts/raisins helped keep the weight on for me when hiking long distances…ie energy dense foods, assuming you’re not trying to lose kilos), and pack weight (depending on distances between stores and how much you’re comfortable carrying).

So the answer is an unavoidable compromise between what an ideal healthy diet should be for a human(something akin to the Harvard answer), and what is feasible when backpacking in terms of weight and energy requirements.
