Which way should my elephant face?

Asked by abysmalbeauty (2739points) August 16th, 2011

I was given an elephant as a reward for a job well done at work. I had it displayed on my desk not necessarily facing any which way. I brought a woman who reports to another manager over to my desk to go over something critical to her job and she insisted that I turn the elephant so that his behind was facing the door otherwise I would be bringing myself and my family misfortune.

I have looked online and everything I read is contradictory. Where should an elephant really face to bring good luck? Behind to the door, trunk to the door, trunk facing you, another way all together?

I am actually fairly superstitious and would feel comforted having the right answer.

If the first thing you see as you walk in to a room is an elephant’s rear end, that is hardly going to let the chi flow freely.

I say mount it up on a rotating tray, give everything and equal share of trunk and butt.

A sculpture on a desk isn’t going to control the outcome of your life, but if you want a “right” answer, face it towards the door.

Have it stomp a Donkey to death and then be put in prison for life. That puts two of them out of action. Works for me.

I am not superstitious at all but I thought I’d quick search with the words “good luck, elephant, facing” . All the results say to face the door.
Superstition aside, that is the best “face” to present to a visitor.

I always thought that elephant statues were supposed to face the front door as well. What I’m finding, at least on a bunch of Feng Shui sites, is the opposite.

In feng shui applications, knowing how to place a feng shui elephant can mean the difference in attracting or repelling chi energy. The main rule for placing an elephant in your home is to always have the elephant facing into the room. If you place an elephant facing your front door, then the elephant’s trumpeted announcement will go right back out the door and your life. Source

Maybe there is a difference in Feng Shui beliefs and more traditional customs.

At the moment, my elephant is facing away from me, looking out the window. I don’t know how it got that way. Since we’re talking about this, I think I’ll turn it.

Now it is three-quarters towards me, facing my computer screen. I don’t want it facing me straight on because that feels too intrusive. Besides which, what’s on my screen is far more interesting than me. I wouldn’t want to face it towards the door because it would have to look through me. Not good.

I think that, while there are rules to Feng Shui, you really need to go on your instinct—assuming you have some familiarity with how chi flows. You don’t have to follow the rules if the situation requires something different.

Square box rooms restrict the chi something fierce. So you wouldn’t want to align your elephant with the room. It needs to be diagonal to the room, but not exactly diagonal, so that it can release the pent up chi and allow it to flow more feely.

Elephants can’t affect your luck, and neither can images of elephants (or anything else). It makes no difference which way your elephant faces; it has no meaning whatsoever. Your colleague has no business forcing her superstitions on you. You are free to humor her if you want. The greatest misfortune it’s likely to cause if you don’t is that you’ll have to hear from her about it.

I’ve never heard of such a superstition. I know there’s “Feng Shui” (which literally means “Wind and Water”) an ancient Chinese practice based on “energy flow” and the impact it has on your “luck” and mental and physical well-being. I believe in Feng Shui somewhat——for example, when you are purchasing a house and house-hunting, you walk into a house for sale and the place feels “odd” to you and uncomfortable, then the Feng Shui is not in an advantageous placement. If you walk into a place that feels “right”, and you sense a lot of positive energy there, then the Feng Shui is supposedly in good stead.

My Feng Shui advice to you is to place your elephant in a position that makes you “feel” most comfortable and enjoyable. When you position it on your desk in such a way that it seems “just right” and most likable, then that is the most “lucky” and beneficial position for YOU. That is the very essence of Feng Shui——when objects are placed in a way that makes you feel relaxed and pleasant, then the “chi energy” is being tapped in the right way, and theoretically, good things will come your way.

Don’t worry about what others tell you about how to place your elephant on your desk. As long as you place it in a position that makes you feel well, that is the right position.

Toy elephants have no effect whatsoever on your “luck.”

That said, the elephant should be in a conspicuous place, and everybody should pretend they don’t see it. Then, if a noob should ask about the elephant, everyone should act stunned and deny that there is an elephant.

Besides, everyone knows that elephants don’t have faces, anyway.

Easter Indian folklore and books on the gods are fairly explanatory, there is one God that has an elephant’s face, just God’s name is Ganesh in which he is the God of obstacles, engine the same traditions the elephant’s trunk turned right side up like a salute brings Good Fortune and lock to all those who possess it, it was never certainly clear on what direction he should face it was just a solid Talisman of good luck,
In the Orient however, there is a very similar folklore where are an elephant’s trunk facing up in a salute would bring good prosperity to those in the hall or those who possess it, however because of the traditional Asian feng shui there may be a slight difference in positioning the ivory elephant with its trunk up, but as far as my research and knowledge goes I really don’t think that there is any particular position that the elephant’s butt faces or trunk faces that part is a myth I hope you are well and wonderful enjoy your day,,,
Namaste,my friends,,,,
