Will plants near a window covered with a solar mesh shade suffer?

Asked by mcbealer (10232points) August 16th, 2011 from iPhone

These shades are made of the type of material frequently used in cafés and restaurants. They allow natural light in, and keep out the UV rays to keep rooms cool and furnishings from fading.

I’m wondering though, how will this affect houseplants? I’m thinking they will be fine, since some plants do well with artificial light alone. What are your thoughts/experiences?

It depends on the light requirements of the plants. Most houseplants are pretty forgiving, and should be fine. If you have something that requires bright or direct sun, it’ll definitely be receiving less UV than before.

@syz ~ will the reduction in UV significantly affect all sun plants? (should I leave the shade up partially?)
