If you believe in souls, does it necessarily mean you believe in ghosts?

Asked by chicklit (215points) August 16th, 2011

What I mean is this: if you believe humans have souls, then wouldn’t it follow that you believe in ghosts? From what I know, people say ghosts are wandering souls, or something like that. I know I don’t believe in either, but that has to do with my religious views. Or lack, thereof. Does religion also play a factor in this as well?

Nope. You can believe that there are souls within people without believing that there are also disembodied souls floating around elsewhere.

For religion, I encourage you to believe in the parts of religion that you believe in, without feeling that you therefore must adopt other beliefs of the religion as well. In my own opinion, this behavior is harmful and causes people to develop opinions that aren’t actually “true” to the person just for the sake of being consistent.

It makes sense, but people will believe whatever they want, anyway.

From a purely old testament point of view, the soul is actually the body. As Genesis states, God created the body, then breathed life into it—therefore, man was called a living soul.

No.

A ghost is something definite, an apparition, a figure, something identifiable, like Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Soul is an abstract notion, that may be nothing more than an attempt to explain in simple terms the sense that many humans have that we all have some connection to the Cosmos but we just don’t know exactly what it is. It could be any number of things, but clearly it is a characteristic of the species to have that sense of connection to the universe.

No. Don’t look for logic or make any assumptions when it comes to belief.

I never thought about it. But I don’t believe in ghosts.

I would think that a person of some faith would be the only ones to believe in the possibility of Ghosts, since people who do not believe in any religion or in a God, believes we stop existing the moment the body dies. So it would make sense to me for them not to believe in existing in anyway shape or form after death.
Now a child who is never taught faith of any kind can believe in Ghosts, but they can also believe in Goblins and the boogie man easy enough since many are scared of the dark.
Movies like Friday the 13 don’t help either. LOL

I think souls and the ghost are same. Don’t you think.
