Is it even possible to resolve an issue with the credit bureau?

My boyfriend went to check his yearly credit report. We put in his current address and we got the one from Experian just fine. When we tried with Equifax, it said that his address information was incorrect. He was told this when he applied for credit at a department store, so he knows he needs to get this settled.

So, he sent a letter explaining the issue to the address Equifax gave him when he tried to file a dispute on the contact information. He also included a copy of his driver’s license and social security card. Three weeks later, we get some generic response letter asking for the same things he sent them originally.

The mail thing obviously didn’t work, so he tried contacting them by phone. Apparently, their job is to make everything a million times more difficult than it should be, and he couldn’t get through to an actual human being.

He needs to get this fixed so he can apply for CareCredit to get some very expensive dental work done. How exactly do people get issues like this resolved?

t can, but it’s like pulling teeth. They don’t like to admit they are wrong and you are basically considered guilty until proven innocent by the credit bureaus. You just have to be persistent and hope that you have the or some or sufficient documentation to prove that the information they have on you is wrong. Sadly, the burden of proof is on you.

This can be a sign of identity theft so I would look into making a complaint of possible I identity theft and then they will have to listen to your boyfriend. He wants to do this immediately and want to look over what is on there to make sure that there isn’t anyting on there that isn’t his because he doesn’t want to have something damaging there that could ruin his credit and he have to fight it because that can be really expensive.

@creative1 I’m not sure why the address is incorrect, but the address they have on file seems to be his last address before this one, but he’s been here for a year. The information on the report from Experian is all correct, but I have no clue what’s on the others. It’s just frustrating because these people are impossible to contact and waiting three weeks to hear back from someone and having them ask for the same information we just sent is absolutely ridiculous.

He could have gotten something as simple as a preapproval at the old address that was intercepted by the new tenants and used, it is something you want to address immediately and tell them to treat it as possible identity theift which that is one way it happens.

@creative1 Luckily the new tenants are his grandparents. But either way, yeah, it’s something we’re trying to address immediately. I’ll tell him to mention identity theft if he can ever get in touch with someone.

I believe it is possible, but it is not very easy – as you are finding out. We are in the midst of trying to remove entries that were the result of identity theft, and it is very time consuming.
