Has anyone ever taken benzonatate and has problem with sleeping?

Asked by Pandora (32398points) August 17th, 2011

I have a bit of a sinus condition that causes nasal drip and makes me cough at night. My doctor prescribed benzonatate and I took it about 10 pm last night. I could not sleep at all last night and the last time I slept was 27 hours ago. My eyes are dry and so are my sinuses. True enough, the coughing is no more, so its not keeping me awake. But the drug has my mind wide awake. I’ve tried reading and other things that will normally knock me out but I can’t sleep.
I’m hoping someone in fluther has taken this drug before and can give me a ball park idea of how long before I am able to sleep.

In addition to what anyone else says, call your doctor. Barring that, your pharmacist.

The most common reported side effect from taking benzonatate is drowsiness however overdoses can cause restlessness so it may be that your dose needs adjusting or your doc needs to try another course of treatment.

Yeah, I looked it up and found the same thing. Nothing about alertness. My husband knew right away it was the pill. He said he had taken it before and didn’t take it either because it didn’t let him sleep. He doesn’t remember though, how long it affected him. The good thing is it’s not making me feel jittery or anything like that. But I’m sure, eventually it may make me feel jittery from being burnt out.
I guess the plus is, if ever I need to drive cross country I got something that will keep me awake and alert for a while.
I think its finally wearing out though. Or at least my eyes are getting really tired. 28 and a half hours. Yep. straight driving I should make it half way across the country.

I react to them the same way @Pandora. 50% of the time I’ll be wide awake, the other 50% I can’t keep my eyes open 10mins after taking the meds.

It’s hard to say how long it’ll stay in your system. I have chronic insomnia. Some meds bring on a bout of a couple of days for me.

Keep in mind that no two people react exactly the same way to any medication. I took tarazidone for a few days and was hyper. I know that many other people take it to sleep. Your system may just react to it differently.
