Can you afford not to work another day in your life?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) August 17th, 2011

Are you somehow covered financially so that you could stop working and still make it till the end of your days? Do you have financial insecurities?

I’ll be able to retire when I’m 96 years old.

Not with the money I owe! HS!! Just 15 more years and I will!

My future plans worked like a charm. I retired at age 65. I paid off the mortgage on the last day of my patrolling the streets.

Only pay utilities and insurance and food and that is it.

Planning ahead is the key.

No. I still have a way to go before I can retire. Even if I could though, I doubt I would. I don’t just work because I want to accumulate wealth and to pay my bills.

Within the next 2 years, My husband and I will be able to retire comfortably. If we were unable to work right now, we could do it, but our lifestyle would take a drastic hit.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Nope. That’ll take me another 20yrs, maybe sooner if we keep living as we are with no loans, no debt.

Yes, thank goodness. I was careful and practical and still enjoyed my life. Regular savings was easy because I started young.

Like @john65pennington, I have modest needs and expenses. The biggest bite is from my real estate taxes, but the house and property are growing, slowly, in value and the taxes are still deductible from my federal income taxes.

Yes. I am fortunate to have the money, but I am a work-a-holic so I’m not going to quit working anytime soon.

No. But, we are trying to get our home off the grid and attempt to pay with cash as much as we can.

@KateTheGreat Will you be my sugar momma?

Judi's avatar

@SpatzieLover , us too. My husband expanded his contracting business and got his Solar Contractors License. Although we are not really selling much solar, we are putting it on buildings we own.

SpatzieLover's avatar

That’s awesome @Judi. Not many people do it here in my area. Our home is perfect for it though. We’re the only home that faces directly SW.

I’ve been in a few homes here now that have just one or two panels. Those alone heat the water all year…not bad in my book!

I am ready to retire every other way BUT financially. Really, isn’t assessing whether one is ready for retirement akin to figuring out if you can “afford” to start a family. Somewhere along the line you either get some buckshot from your place of employment through the downsizing experience or you just DECIDE there is life on the other side.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Yup. Why do you ask?

Judi's avatar

@SpatzieLover ; Hot water is a good start, but a completely different type of system from electricity. It works great though! Germany (icy cold Germany) uses more solar hot water than anyone else!

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Judi Thank you for the info. Now I have another item to research…German solar usage! :)

If you mean work for a salary, I already am considered retired, and I receive Social Security checks every month. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t work.

Right now, my husband is working full time and beyond at a very good, high paying job. I

I believe if a person doesn’t work for a salary, they have to work even harder to survive.

I wish! My 401k is only 3 years old haha I have a ways to go before I can even consider retiring.

filmfann's avatar

I currently have 2 mortgages. If I sell one house, with my retirement, and my 401K, I should be able to make it. I am waiting till I am 59½ for tax reasons.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Blackberry Sure! I’d be happy to!

Berserker's avatar

Christ no lol. I ain’t even got enough for a box of fuckin’ KD at the mo. XD

JessicaRTBH's avatar

Indeed. Although I work 12 hour days simply because I like to work. A bunch.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Not even close. I have zero savings and live paycheck to paycheck. I am seriously starting to worry about my future security.
