Are there any songs that remind you of your best friend(s)?

Asked by disenchanted_poisongirl (1443points) August 17th, 2011

Tell me if there are any songs that remind you of your best friend(s) and why those songs remind you of her, him, or them.

There are two songs that remind me of my best friend. Otherside by RHCP, and The Man Who Sold The World by Nirvana. Not because of the lyrics or something. These songs remind me of her because these are the two songs we always listen to.

It is not so much a song that reminds me of a friend because of a mutual experience we had or something like that, this song makes me think of my friend/friendship in general.

Carry On My Wayward Son and We Are The Champions. They were both oldies by the time we were in our late teens and first met. For a long time and even after we started dating/got married, it felt like he and I against the world. We were so ambitious, so anxious. We lived a lot during that time and it was great.

My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music. A young woman and I were hired to conduct a training class to hotel managers all over the US. After our training, the next step was to conduct a pilot class and tag-team teach (we each took one half of the class).

The night before this class, we were checked into one hotel suite where she slept in the bedroom and I slept on the sofa bed in the living room. We were both nervous enough to throw up, so we started talking across the expanse and in the dark. It led to singing this song together, and we eventually fell asleep.

Years later, after we both moved on careerwise, yet remained friends, we went on a trip to Europe together. Part of that trip included a Sound of Music tour while in Salzburg, Austria. We had a good laugh over this memory when the tour made a stop at an inn for us to try their crisp apple strudel.

This song and this one remind me of the summer of 1997, when my best girlfriend and I were inseperable. Those were the two songs we’d always blast on the radio in her car or mine. We still sing them to each other when we leave phone messages.

My friend texted me the other day and said that he was listening to Linkin Park’s Shadow of the Day and he thought of me because of the lines:
Pink cards and flowers on your window,
Your friends all plead for you to stay.
Sometimes beginnings aren’t so simple,
Sometimes goodbye’s the only way.

(I’m leaving for college next week and I am the only one of my friends who is going to a different school.)
Anyway, our friendship was rocky in the beginning and now we are best friends, but I’m leaving so our friendship will most likely start to fade.
Now whenever I hear this song I think of him.

“Separate Ways” (by Journey) and “Baby Can I Hold You Tonight” (by Tracy Chapman) makes me think of my closest friend in college. I can’t even remember how we started, but we would sing that together often.

“Angels Among Us” (by Alabama) makes me think of my son and the friends who helped me through being a single mom for the first 6 years of his life.

Christmas songs remind me of one of the best nights I ever had in college—a group of close friends sat in the hall of one dorm and we took turns singing/leading Christmas songs and joining each other. The best part was when we were doing “Silent Night,” my closest friend (the same one mentioned above) didn’t stop at the end of the first verse, but went through the next two verses alone. We all sat there in awe.

“Burn, Georgia, Burn” (by Alabama)- reminds me of my son’s biological father. We used to really get into the chorus, but in retrospect, it’s funny… that song talks about the girl getting left to fend for herself alone… shaking head.

Ah… another one. “I’m Your Angel” (by R. Kelly/Celine Dion) and “I Swear” (Boys II Men version) make me think of another close friend who psycho-INSISTED I perform them at her wedding as my wedding gift.
