Is there a way to make the drawers of old dressers open and close smoothly?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) August 17th, 2011

These are antiques with dovetail joints.

Is there anything I can do so that they will pull out and go back in easily?

I have one of these sticky drawer dressers. It’s the wood on wood that has swollen over time. I was told to rub a beeswax candle across the areas where the wood meets and it worked great without damaging the integrity of the piece.

Old wooden drawers wear out eventually.

Level the drawers, runners and drawer guides, make sure they are square and shim them if needed.

Replace or repair the runners and drawer guides. You may be able to get by with sanding the surfaces that contact and rubbing with beeswax.

I think I remember seeing nylon pieces that attach to the bottoms of the drawers that give a slippery surface as well as add lost thickness to the worn wood http://www.rockler.com/c/drawer-hardware.cfm

Rub the inside runners with soap. I guess it is a similar solution to @Blueroses.’ @WestRiverrat‘s right though. I’d have to have a professional do that job though.

I bought an old dresser from someone, who used paraffin wax for this. (sounds like beeswax works, too)
