How can I remove social network icons from websites?

Asked by victord66 (201points) August 19th, 2011

Over the years those annoying social network icons have grown from just one to dozens now. On some websites they take up a whole column and then some. Is there any way to remove them so they don’t show up? I use Firefox with addblock but that doesn’t seem to work.

No. They aren’t ads, and apparently, other people love them because where would we be without Web 2.0?

I disabled them as well, both because of the added privacy that comes in removing them, and because it slows the loading of websites.

There’s an adblock subscription that filters them: https://monzta.maltekraus.de/adblock_social.txt

Adding it was a bit of a hassle, apparently you cannot just add any subscription anymore. I had to forge an installation link myself, let’s see if I can make on for you: subscribe.

Oh, and if some individual buttons still slip through, you could use Element Hiding Helper.

I use Request Policy. It is very effective but requires a lot of training. It pretty much says do not allow images or code from other domains to run. Example, another example.
