When I ask you for fictional female protagonists, who do you think of?
Well-written or poorly written, love them or hate them, obscure or popular: what comes to mind when you think about literary heroines (or antiheroines)?
I want to get an idea of the sorts of answers I might get if I asked this question in a class presentation, so answers related to 20th century literature will be most relevant but I don’t want to limit your thinking.

Well, I just mentioned Wonder Woman on another Q, so she leaps into my mind first.
Scarlett O’Hara was the first to come to mind. I loved reading Gone With The Wind.
Well, I first think of Tess Durbeyfield, but to stick to the 20th Century theme, Franny Glass.
I would have to go with Lolita.
“Bloody Jack,” from a series of young adult adventure novels. The story is about an orphan girl who lands a job as cabin boy, and who turned almost immediately to piracy. I think her name was Jacqueline or somesuch, and the abbreviation arose from her supposed masculinity.
I haven’t actually read the series, but my sister has and rather enjoys it.
Catwoman, nothing like a woman in clingy black garb! Yeow!!!!
Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice

Lady Chatterly also.

Jane Eyre
Juliet of Romeo and Juliet
Daisy Buchanan The Great Gatsby
Laura Ingalls Little House
Rebecca Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Bridget Jones
Jing-mei The Joy Luck Club

Ellie Arroway of Carl Sagan’s Contact. Love her.
Jane Eyre, Sabriel, Lyra Belacqua, Anne of Green Gables, Mulan, Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Elizabeth Bennett.
I first think of Scarlet O’Hara from Gone with the Wind and Mina Murray/Harker from Dracula. Her entire name is actually Wilhelmina. That’s a messed up name, man.
