Why are people so happy to change their body surgically?

Asked by thebluewaffle (1002points) August 22nd, 2011

I know no-one is perfect and everybody has flaws. But these flaws are what make people unique.
I for one, wouldn’t change a thing about myself via surgery.
Basically, what pushes people to actually getting any form of body altering surgery done?

The same reason humans do a lot of things. Becasue they can.

Because its the only way they can make how they look on the outside match how they look on the inside…... fake.

It’s part of our society. If modern culture placed value on natural beauty (as opposed to the highly maintained/ brushed-on artificial beauty we see in magazines), then we wouldn’t see the same trends of body mutilation.

To correct physical flaws, or disfigurement from scarring, birthmarks, or any other reason. To boost self esteem, to fit a beauty mold, to be closer to the generally accepted (yet narrow) idea of what is attractive to society.

@ANef_is_Enuf. I understand why people do it to crrect things like facial scarring ect.
But nose jobs, face lifts and the like, leave me completely dumbfounded.

@thebluewaffle because some people are more susceptible to media influence, to low self esteem, and to a desire to fit into a perceived image of how we are “supposed” to look.

Also some people just like to have stupidly big tits.

thebluewaffle's avatar

@Lightlyseared exactly, my girlfriend just won’t succomb to the idea.

@thebluewaffle Well you’d be surprised how hard it is to find underwear that fits them.

How old are you and have you had children? There is nothing “unique” about a stretchmark laden flab of skin that no amount of diet and exercise can tighten and deflated boobs hanging to your belly button. My mommy makeover was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Maybe they don’t like their body or want an improvement.

@judi Thank the good lord that I haven’t been given the ability to carry a child.

They have the money, but not the self esteem.

It’s really easy to criticize people about wanting plastic surgery when one fits easily within the norms of societies expectations. I don’t know if you, @thebluewaffle, are an average or better than average looking someone, but if your nose was really big you might want to make it smaller. If you were female and you were competely flat chested you might want a little bit of breast like the majority of the female population.

If you live your whole life with a certain body and then pregnancy really messes it up, you might want your old body back. The body you lived with for so many years. Aging over time is much different than 9 months totally screwing with your muscles and skin when you are 32.

They like to please others.

I have a step daughter who is obessed with her appearance, and ended up gettin breast enlargements to correct her percieved flaw. Is she happier now? Maybe happier, but still not happy and secure, which is silly because she is beautiful.

Because they feel better about themselves and more confident if they believe they look good. Women get all kinds of ideas about how others see them. I rarely agree with them, but it’s not me who has to live in their body. Their beliefs are quite different from mine. It annoys me, but I am trying to be respectful.

Here are a few reasons:

Young man -25yrs old loses 200lbs and is left with “batwings” of loose skin. Surgery can trim away the stretched skin no amount of exercise will even tone back into place.

Young woman -25yrs old has one breast significantly smaller/larger than the other to where it’s very noticeable even when wearing a bra/clothes. She feels awkward naked. Surgery can even the difference in sizes to where getting dressed/undressed/intimate isn’t an image issue, nothing noted amiss or peculiar.

Small child is born with small “nubs” on the pinky fingers where a 6th digit tried to form. Surgery can remove these and also the kid’s hangup about holding hands, shaking hands, people looking at the hands.

These are examples from people in my own family that no one had issue with. There are many more who’ve had “mommy makeovers”, breast lifts, stomach stapling/weight loss surgeries.

Because they want to conform to the tacit image of beauty.

I think it can be about self esteem, conformity, etc but not necessarily. Everyone has their own reasons. If you see yourself a certain way and your physical appearance doesn’t match your perspective and you have the power to change it, why not? I say do what makes you happy and don’t apologize for it.
