What's the best year for movie SCORES?

Asked by 6rant6 (13705points) August 22nd, 2011

I’ve seen a lot of people comment on what year was the best for movies – 1939, 1953, etc.

But I’m looking for the year in which movies had the best scores written for them. Just to be clear, a movie like “Pirate Radio” which includes a bunch of great songs on its sound track, but had nothing written for it is NOT what I am looking for.

If you’ve got a year, you’ll be able to name composers associated with the movies: these people

Any ideas? What year do you go with and why?

Does American Graffitti count?

The first thing that comes to my mind is 1963 Pink Panther. Henry Mancini wrote all except two of the scores. Amazing.

A Quick Search here looks like 1964 was pretty good.

That depends on how much you enjoy Tangerine Dream.

@dappled_leaves .. Tangerine Dream.. Now THAT group I haven’t heard from in a loooong time.. Did a great job on Blade Runner.. I’ll probably get a lot of flack for this but my favorite was Under Siege..Great plot, great actors and the music (Gary Chang) was academy award material.

@chewhorse, as someone mentioned in another thread, Vangelis did the soundtrack to Blade Runner, but it really did seem as though Tangerine Dream scored every 80s movie, didn’t it?

@Kayak8 The highest ratings for original music written for a 1964 movie is Mary Poppins at 20.
West Side Story and My Fair Lady were Broadway scores adapted for the movies. And Hard Days Night used songs the Beatles were singing on their tour. Saturday Night Fever is of course a compilation. I’m not saying those we’re great movies, or great sound tracks, but I’m really looking for original writing for the movies.

Just looking at this list, I’d have to say 1939 is a strong contender. The Wizard of Oz got the highest rating (5) of music written just for the movie. Plus Gone With the Wind stands at (19).

IMDB has this list of all the nominees for best score over the years the award has been given. The presentation is easy to read, but my problem is I don’t know enough scores (or have an opinion of their quality) to make use of it. Anyone else want to give a try at picking out the best year?
