Whats the best cheap car to get in Australia?
I am looking for a used car under $15k. What would be the most reliable, fuel efficient car? A Holdern Barina? A Kia? Any ideas most appreciated.

My Footprint guidebook says most cars are made locally or imported from Asia, Euro and American cars are more expensive and “harder to find spares for” (parts?), spares are easiest to find for Aussie built Fords and Holdens and sometimes Toyotas. You might want to ask on the Lonely Planet Thorntree forums.
I think I read somewhere that the toyota corolla is the most popular car, I have an old ‘89 and he’s really reliable and sturdy (for an old car) and I only paid like 2k for it so if you can find a newer toyota corolla it would be more reliable but definitely in your price range.
You can buy a brand new Barina, Kia, Proton, etc. for under 15K. Do you specifically want a used car? I think I would opt for brand new then you would have no worries because it would be under an extended warranty whereas used car warranties are generally only for a short period of time.
If you still want used, look on ebay, there are many cars listed there.
Are you staying in Australia when you come back for your son? Or are you just picking him up and then going back to USA? If you are staying here, I would surely go for a new car.
I’m not sure about fuel efficiency, but I was instructed to get a Ford Focus for safety reasons. Mine and my brother’s are going along nicely.
@rooeytoo im staying- my son doesnt want to leave and I don’t want to leave my daughter there without me-it’s just easier for me to stay there- thanks all!
