Do you ever come across quotes in books that you want to share....so you mark the page....and never remember or find it again to share?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) August 23rd, 2011

I found this, decided to come right in and post it: “To repay evil with kindness is the proof of a good man. A superior man blames himself, a common man blames others.”—Pearl S. Buck, Peony pg 110 in my paperback book.

Sounds like Confucius, but a Google search didn’t attribute it to him, which means nothing.

Anything you want to share?

No, I usually just run down the hall shouting to my mom, “You gotta read this!”

I would write it out but I’ve seemed to have forgotten it as well as the book it’s from. Oh well

Happens all the time! I can’t find any to share right now, though.

I did find one tonight that I couldn’t figure out where to share it:

She knows, but doesn’t understand, that on a bone-and-blood level mothers-in-law don’t get along with daughters-in-law. I’ve told her that the written character for quarrel is two women under a roof.
Lisa See, Dreams of Joy

I find it interesting that this MIL/DIL drama has gone on for centuries in all parts of the world. I also think the symbol for “quarrel” is funny.

I write them down, for occasions such as this…

“The rising of the spring stirred a serious, mystical excitement in him and made him forgetful of her. He would pick up eggshells, a bird’s wing, a jawbone, the ashy fragment of a wasp’s nest. He would peer at each of them with the most absolute attention and then put them in his pockets where he kept his jack knife and his loose change. He would peer at them as if he could read them and pocket them as if he could own them – This is death in my hand, this is ruin in my breast pocket, where I keep my reading glasses. At such times he was as forgetful of her as he was of his suspenders and his Methodism. But all the same, it was then that she loved him best, as a soul all unaccompanied, like her own.”
