What is the best most valuable make up tip you can give me?

Asked by Jellie (6492points) August 24th, 2011

I’m addicted to make up and so would love some advice or tips that jellies have to offer. A few of my own:

Use primer potions for your eyes whenever you want your make up to last longer. I feel they are under rated.

A good make up brush can make or break your look. Be it a blending brush, contour brush, blush brush etc.

One that my mom often repeats to me: always take your make up off. I have been lazy sometimes but I paid the price when I woke up with a little pimple/white head kind of of thing on my waterline

Try to use a natural or near natural oil to take your make up off. They work just as well or even better than make up removers. Eye make up removers are harsh and may damage your skin over time.

Hit me with your best tip.

The best makeup trick is to be healthy and happy!
Drink lots of water, get lots of good sleep, stay away from too much alcohol, use a good clay mask once a week, and a good primer makes a huge dif. in how well your makeup applies and stays on.

Get rid of mascara that is more than 3 months old and exfolliate daily with a loofa sponge or washcloth.

I spent a long train ride at the weekend watching the girl opposite me apply make up. Before she started she was very natural but looked gorgeous, – when she finnished she looked like a cabaret transvestite.

Know when to stop.

Jellie's avatar

Thanks @Coloma I agree yes I once also made the mistake of putting on old mascara and my eyes got itchy and swelled up. @Lightlyseared you are right, some girls go over board and end up looking artificial and plastic.

I wonder what @rebbel is going to say :P I see him typing.

1. Don’t use too much, I am scared of clowns.
2. Put some foundation between your breasts (from the top of the breasts, up) to simulate a cleavage matching bigger boobies for people who want to have some more cleavage.
Saw this on Oprah, some fifteen years ago…, never figured I would ever use that info :-)

The best tip I can give you is to please, do not, even on pain of death, listen to any makeup tip I try to impart to you. I have the makeup sense of a snail.

Fantastic lashes, apply Lancome Definicils first, then Hypnose second. Costs a fortune to buy both, but everyone will notice your lashes. Many times you can just buy the definicils and get the Hypnose for free in a gift with purchase, so you can just use the hypnose when you want to really glam it up.

Also, I love cake eyeliner for top lid.

@rebbel agreed… over here we call over done girls “pastries.” Got too much cleavage, did Oprah say anything on how to make them appear smaller :P
p.s. lurve for admitting to watching Oprah like a real man.

The best make up is when people notice YOU, not your make up.

Invest in organic non-carcinogenic version of all make-up. Check all your brands with websites who monitor that kind of thing, for your sake and for the sake of the environment.

@JLeslie ; you just cost me money. :-) I like Dior Show, but I guess I have to try something new.

“Don’t wear it” sometimes. “Don’t wear it” more and more often.

A lot of men appreciate “natural” in all kinds of ways, believe it or not. I like makeup that’s done so artfully that I can’t even tell that it’s used at all, but that’s unfortunately rare. Following that, I prefer “none at all” to “too much”.

Oh, make up brushes. Chanel for cheek contour, nothing like it. There is an angle on the brush, it is fantastic. And, Paula Dorf brush for applying eye shadow at the crease of the lid. It is a densely packed brush with a flat angled end.

About a year ago, I discovered this product which replaced all facial moisturizers in my regimen. One light spritz after cleansing, morning and night, is all I need for soft, healthy looking skin, no blemishes and makeup doesn’t slide off of it.

JLeslie's avatar

@Judi I always advise people to never buy those mascara base products. Usually clear or white to thicken lashes before applying mascara. You can use the Definicils as a base or for a natural look, because it is not clumpy and it lengthens well, and you can put a heavier mascara over it for thick lashes if you want.

Removed by me.

Thanks @JLeslie always looking for good brushes. And that is an excellent tip on using Definicils as I too always thought the mascara base makes your lashes clump like crazy.

@Blueroses that looks pretty awesome actually

Don’t use so much foundation and cover up that your face does’t look like yours. To much blush always looks a little stupid too. But I fully support being crazy with eye makeup! you can have so much fun with it. You don’t even HAVE to make it look natural. Just remeber, many people believe, being unique is special, and looking like a perfect barbie will just make you seem fake.

Mix half foundation, half moisturiser and apply. Much more natural and stretches your foundation further (which can be really expensive).

Do it how you want it. I used to worry about doing my makeup the way I thought other people would like it until it occurred to me that I’m the one stuck with me all day, so I should do my makeup in such a way that I like it. Yes, I think this means that if you want to cake it on, then cake it on and wear it proudly.

You don’t have to match it to what you’re wearing, even if you want to use an outrageous eye palette that is a different color than your outfit.

When applying mascara, instead of applying it with straight up and down strokes, wiggle the wand a little as you apply. It will apply more evenly and with fewer clumps.

I always apply eyeliner…erm not sure how to explain… lift your upper eyelid up like you would if you were apply liner to the lower lid and put eye liner on the inner edge of you eye lid (the bit that looks like the bottom of your eye when you pull it down to put eye liner on)

TOLD YOU I couldn’t explain what I mean!! Anyway it really helps to make your eye pop!

Hope it helps… :)

Blueroses's avatar

OH! I learned that makeup effects are often counter-intuitive. I have a narrow face and deep-set eyes, so I used to use liner only on the outer ⅔ of the upper lid, thickening the line toward the outer edge and avoided dark shades of shadow thinking it would make my eyes look farther apart. It didn’t.

A stage makeup artist taught me how to outline my entire eye with a thin line and use a deep plum shadow to make my eyes look big and bright.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Avoid “trailer park” eyes where you have liner on the insides of both your upper/lower lids as well as underneath the lashline, topped off by huge amounts of clumpy mascara.

Think Magenta or Columbia from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and avoid.

Black lipstick (very popular a few years back) makes your mouth look like an anus.

filmfann's avatar

@KatawaGrey Sorry, the cleavage makes it too hard to see the lipstick, but I am pretty sure it still looks like an anus.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@filmfann: I don’t think black lipstick automatically looks bad. It looks amazing on Beyonce though.

Can someone explain to me why anyone thought pink was a good color around the eyes? Pink is the color of infected skin, swelling, or soreness. I never understood what was supposed to be attractive about that.
On the other hand my make up is so out of date I could use a makeover. Every time I’ve had them do a make-up job on my face, they want to put pink on my lids. So I say no and that’s that.
My suggestion? Never pull all the hairs out of your eyebrows and pencil in new brows.

JLeslie's avatar

@Sunny2 Usually eye shadow tends to follow the color trends of fashion in general. Pink has been big for a while in ready-to-wear.

Sunny2's avatar

@JLeslie Thank you. I guess I didn’t realize that.

A long time ago I asked a dermatologist “How can I reduce the effects of aging?” and he said “wear sunscreen every day.” He told me to get the kind of moisturizer that has sunscreen in it (every company makes it: Olay, Almay, etc.) Usually they have SPF 15. He said put a little on your face every day. He told me he did, as well. I have done that and it has kept my skin looking good, and also it’s great under makeup – makes eye liner go on smoothly. I also put it in my neck and throat now, that it’s summer.

Find make up product that safe to use and healthy on your skin. I think the best way to do to learn more about the product is by reading product reviews so that you have more knowledge about it.
