Vegetarians and vegans: What is your ultimate veggie or vegan burger like?
I am a vegetarian who loves burgers. It’s not so much the actual burger itself although a good veggie patty can make or break my day, but that’s just because I love food as it is what’s on the burger. A Red Robin recently opened up near my mom’s house and they have the option to switch out any of their beef patties for a veggie or vegan patty at no extra charge. Because of this, I have been reveling in all of the different Red Robin burgers. Now, of course, I want to start preparing my own at home. For me, my favorite burger toppings are guacamole, some kind of cheese, mushrooms and tomatoes.
What about you, collective, what do you like on your veggie burgers?

I eat mine without a bun, on a bed of lettuce with dill relish, wax peppers and yellow mustard. I’m not a vegetarian, but I love veggie burgers.
The lady in front of me at the BK the other day ordered hers with double bacon.
Best veggie burger in the world is at Ruby Tuesday. It tastes just like a hamburger.
Wife and I have tried other veggie burgers and they truly suck, compared to Ruby Tuesday.
When I was going to school at SUNY Purchase campus, there was a little stall outside the student union building that had THE ultimate veggie burger. I’ve never found its equal and I still don’t know what made it fabulous, but it was toothsome, flavorful, all made fresh there… All I’ve tried since, fail to meet that standard.
The most amazing thing I have had lately was the eggplant sandwich here. perfectly seasoned breaded eggplant on a fresh ciabatta roll with paprika sauce, horseradish sauce, crunchy lettuce…not quite a burger, but man, was it good!
Classic Veggie Burger. Simply toasted bun, light lettuce, ketchup, mustard, extra pickle, extra onion, and a Boca Patty. That’s kind of lunch like.
My Dinner Veggie Burger. Sautéed onion, Boca patty, a couple sundried cherry tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, asparagus on the side.
VOILA! :D
I’d like one with a multi-grain bun (fiber is a major priority in my diet), Boca burger, Romaine lettuce, an onion slice, a tomato slice, dill relish, soy cheese, and eggless mayo mixed with BBQ sauce.
The best veggie burger I ever ate came from a little takeout joint in Los Angeles County called Covina Tasty. The joint used to be a Tastee Freeze about 20 years ago, and has probably been there since the late 50’s. But then in the 90’s this fellow took it over (kept the same building and facade) but turned it into a vegetarian fast food place. They’ve got burgers and dogs and fake chicken nuggets and burritos and tacos etc. But the regular old cheeseburger with fries is da bomb! The best thing about it, is the fact that it’s wrapped up in that yellow paper and served in one of those red plastic baskets. Just like the good old days.
My favorite toppings, for when I’m making veggie burgers at home (my fave brand is Mornigstar Farms Grillers Prime) is to make up some vegetarian chili, then add some sliced cheddar cheese, a few dill pickle slices and a big old piece of iceberg lettuce, sliced onion, with ketchup, mustard and mayo.
The other way I like to eat them, which was inspired by a now defunct restaurant in my town, is to have a burger topped with peanut butter and mayonaise (sounds icky, tastes fantastic! Kind of like Asian peanut sauce) pickles, tomato and lettuce. You have to try this.
The third way is to grill up some mushrooms and onions and put those on the burger with a dollp of barbecue sauce. Yum!
I’m not a vegetarian but I love chick pea burgers on a bun, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, little mayo and some sweet chili sauce. Gotta have the sweet chili sauce.
(answer from my veggie wife) prefers burgers that don’t try and pretend to be meat so a flat mushroom burger with gorgonzola cheese and cracked black pepper.
