How do I get my dyed hair to fade and what does hair developer do?

Asked by desiree333 (3241points) August 25th, 2011

My hair was almost white blonde, but I couldn’t keep up with the roots anymore so I dyed it a light brown. It faded a lot so I dyed it a medium brown, and it faded to a reddish colour. Then I dyed it a medium brown again and it went black! It has been fading a tiny little bit but is still almost black and it has been at least a month and a half. I want to speed up the fading process so I can grow it out without noticeable roots. Any good tips that won’t damage my hair too much?

Also, when I was blonde I purchased a bottle of 10 volume cream developer and a “lightest blonde/natural ash” demi-permanent colour. What does the developer actually do? (please, in layman’s terms) What would happen if I just put the developer in my hair and then washed it out? Can I somehow use these products now to lighten my hair up a bit? Without turning it orange of course!

I don’t know about the developer, but to get your hair color to fade wash it with hot water and a clarifying shampoo, and often.

@quiddidyquestions I wish there was something else I can put in my hair once, wash it out and my hair will have faded quite a bit. It’s kind of damaging to my hair to wash it with a clarifying so much. I just want a solution that I only have to do a couple of times.

If there was something that quick, it would damage your hair. @quiddidyquestions is correct. Washing it a lot will fade it without much damage. You have probably already damaged it from all the different colors you have put on it. I would suggest you go to a professional hair dresser for their professional opinion. Yes it is expensive, but it’s worth it in the long run.

@chyna That’s true, I will do the clarifying and also put a tbsp of baking soda in my shampoo.

You can also put lemon on your hair. It will def. fade! Make sure after doing this you condition it with a good conditioner.

Also, if you get highlights it will make it look less dark and harsh.

@quiddidyquestions I would get highlights, but my hair is almost black! I can’t picture highlights looking right with such dark hair. Maybe I will go to the salon and they will have the right shade to highlight my hair.

wash it with ‘prell’. then condition it alot! The developer is ammonia based and activates the bleach- it’s for lifting colour and don’t don’t don’t use it to lighten your already damaged hair it will destroy it. You might just want to go to a hair dresser too, and let them fix it, then leave it alone for awhile.

@trailsillustrated I have decided to continue the no-poo method. The baking soda has helped with fading the colour a bit. I am also going to try lemons (as a rinse) because they will lighten my hair as well. Then, I’m going to go get a trim and get medium/light brown highlights. This way my hair will not become damaged. I would certainly love to try Prell but I can’t seem to find it where I live. I live in Canada so I think that’s why. I’ll look at WalMart for it.
