Any experience using Allerpet/C for cat allergies?

Asked by 8Convulsions (2182points) August 26th, 2011

My boyfriend and I recently adopted a little kitty. Within 30 minutes or so he was showing signs of allergies. (Stuffy nose, sneezing.) By the 4th day, it had gotten so bad that his chest hurt and his throat was constricting. He was having a hard time breathing.
We sent the kitty back to my Mom’s while we are trying to figure out what to do. We are both heartbroken thinking that we might have to find her a new home.

Does anyone have any experience using Allerpet/C? It seems like it would be the perfect solution, but we don’t know if it really works.

We already tried switching to crystal cat litter. (Which has almost no scent or dust.) We used hypoallergenic/shed control wipes. Vacuumed. Etc. The only thing he didn’t try was taking allergy pills. He took one after we already dropped her off at my Mom’s, and it seemed to help, but we don’t know for sure, since he isn’t around the cat anymore.

He has never shown signs of being allergic to cats before. (Even after spending the night in a friends one bedroom apartment with her three cats.) Could it be because this cat is licking herself more than usual? (She is a bit of an OCD/stress groomer.)

Any advice for someone living with a cat and allergies?
If he took an allergy pill every day, for as long as we have the cat, would that help?

Any advice is welcome. We are desperate.

It is actually the proteins in the saliva that stimulate an immune reaction, so an over-groomer is probably not helping the situation.

There are some products that seem to help, although nothing will completely get rid of dander and the associated allergens.

My allergies are exacerbated by dirty, unkempt cats. It might be worth bathing the kitty and seeing if that helps. There are some decent over the counter allergy medications available now, so if your boyfriend is willing, being medicated pre-exposure may help.

I have to say, however, that your boyfriend’s reaction sounds relatively severe, so you may have to be a dog owner.

Yes, we use the Allerpet/C combined with the Allersearch anti-allergen spray, and it does help. The kids do take allergy medication, but even if they forget to take it there are no symptoms… so it makes a difference in our household.

@ANef_is_Enuf did your kids have symptoms similar to my boyfriend’s before you tried all that? Or were their symptoms less severe to begin with? Thanks for the link. :)

No, they were never severe. Is there a reason he is ruling out the use of medication? Claritin OTC is awesome.
Also, I’ll tell you what, my own allergies are far better since using the spray. I’m not allergic to cats, but it works on multiple allergens, so I have noticed a difference, personally.

No, he’s open to it. It’s just we are already about $200 into this cat. We are weighing our options before we go out and spend even more on medication and products, with the possibility of them not working. It’s just a lame situation.

@8Convulsions well, I can only speak from personal experience, and I would aim for the medication before the other products. I do think that the products help, but it sounds like his allergy is relatively severe.

I have used Allerpet/C with success also. My husband is allergic to one of our cats and using it consistently helps him. One other thing to do is keep the cat out of your bedroom. It will help if it’s not sleeping with you.

@tedibear is right. Vacuuming daily, washing linens and curtains regularly, dusting, keeping the cat out of your room, and regularly bathing her will all help matters.

Update: We ended up getting an air purifier, allergy pills, Allerpet/C, and some Bitter Apple spray to help with her OCD grooming, as well as bathing her. It’s been a week today that she’s been back with us, and sofar, so good. My boyfriend still gets some symptoms occasionally, (like if he decides to pick her up) but it’s nothing more than a tickle in his throat or a mild runny nose. He isn’t even taking the allergy pills everyday! I honestly think the air purifier has helped the most, but it’s hard to know for certain. We are just happy it’s working out! :)

Hi 8Convulsions – I had 4 people with Asthma living in my house with me and my 2 cats. I was not about to get rid of them. My Vet told me about Allerpet-C for Cats and I put some on a paper towel and rubbed it all through the cats coat all over the body, don’t get in the eyes though, and did this every day at least once a day and they have been fine ever since that time. So it does work great. Hope you can do that for your boyfriend and his allergies ease up so you can enjoy your kitty. Good Luck
