How long will my MacBook Pro battery last if I keep the brightness turned all the way down and the computer unplugged?

To be clear, I mean the brightness would be turned to zero, pitch black — the equivalent of turning the monitor off.
The reason I’m asking is I’m expecting a power outage due to Hurricane Irene, so I want to know how long I could use the laptop as a charger for my iPhone (or iPod).

Google pushmonitoroff, its an app that actually turns off the backlight and monitor when you press shift and F1, otherwise 0% is still going to have some light and power usage. Make sure you also turn off wifi, bluetooth, extra programs that you don’t need, everything. Charge your phone and what not now, and turn them off until the hurricane hits.
Put it to sleep. It will still charge over USB while asleep while using very little battery power. I’m not sure of how many charges you can give but it should be more than three.
And keep in mind that you should turn down the brightness on you iPhone/iPod too. The screen uses the most battery.
Thanks for the responses.
Putting it to sleep is a great idea, and I’ll look into pushmonitoroff.
To be clear, I will of course make sure everything stays fully charged before the power goes out.
Also clear the backgrounding apps on the iphone, because that keeps them running a bit and uses more battery.
Again, my question is how long the battery will last. No one has answered this.
The answer is that is that nobody knows. Batteries that are a year old hold a lot less charge than new ones. It is all guesswork.
OK. Mine is almost a year old.
Depends on your system and your laptop model. Mine’s from 2008 and my battery lasts 4–5 hours when it’s active, and a whole day when it’s sleeping; newer ones last even longer. I have a thing that tells me how many hours and minutes of power I have left but I don’t remember how to get it.
@efritz :: This question is about charging a iPhone/iPod from the battery on the laptop. To charge the iDevices it will pull a lot of power from the battery on the laptop.
@johnpowell – right, so it’ll be active, so it’ll last 4–5 hours like I stated. Probably longer on a Pro though.
