Can a child have arthritis?
Lately my knees have been hurting so bad I can barely stand up. I thought at first it was because of volleyball. Or, I have arthritis. It’s not only my kneea but my shoulders as well.
What is it?

Yes. I hope you don’t have it.
Do you live where there is a lot of Lymes Disease?
@JLeslie Ohio, so I honestly don’t know.
I’ve had arthritis since I was 18 due to injury.
Sad to say, yes, a child can have arthritis. A pediatrician can diagnose it for you.
Like JLeslie asked, do you live in an area with deer ticks around? Have you noticed a circular rash anywhere on your body lately? Have you been having headaches or chills? What about fever, fatigue or swollen lymph nodes? You want to get tested for lyme disease if you answered yes to any of these questions, especially the first one.
Of course, it is possible to have arthritis. Go get yourself checked.
Please get it checked out.
Yeah, you should get checked. Don’t let it go on long without going to the doctor.
How old are you?
Well, it could be growing pains. Is it like an ache? Is it worse when you wake up, and then when you move around it feels better?
Have you been camping or in or near the woods recently?
I don’t really camp because I hate bugs. I think it could be growing pains though. Because when I move around, it doesn’t hurt.
Ankylosing Spondylitis is one form of arthritis that can affect juveniles. It is more common in males. Known as arthritis of the spine but in our family situation it ended up being more all the joints.
Arthritis feels better when you move around. Generally people wake up feeling stiff, and then as they move around the pain diminishes during the day. How long have you felt the pain?
Growing pains….my knees felt like Cathy Bates had been working them over when I was 14.
Regular arthritis is less common in younger people (but still possible), but Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly onsets at an earlier age. I do not think you have arthritis or RA, though, and I don’t want you to worry about it (although seeing a doctor is a good idea). I think you’re having growing pains and soreness from being active in volleyball. I was sore often at that age too.
Do get checked out just in case, though, dear.
You don’t have any open wounds or anything that might invite infection, do you? My first symptom of sepsis was extreme body pain, especially in my knees. But I had a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) at the time.
