What type of gecko would pair best with a hermit crab?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) August 28th, 2011

I was thinking about getting a gecko and a hermit crab and found some geckos with similar needs as a hermit crab. Would a pictus gecko pair well? I have a large enough terrarium for both. They both can have coconut fiber for the substrate. They have similar temperature and humidity requirements. My biggest concern is will they hurt each other?

Well, I guess it really depends on what type of sauce you plan on using….

But seriously, I would not recommend keeping them in the same terrarium. When the hermit crab gets large enough he is going to start thinking about having gecko for lunch.

I disagree with @YoBob. It sounds like they’d get along fine,as long as you pick the right size pets. Hermit crabs are scavengers and the only way your hermit crab would eat the gecko is if it were already dead. Here’s a link. http://www.hermitcrabshome.com/what-hermit-crabs-eat/ I took the time to scroll through a few sites, and from what I pick up, geckos like only live food, preferably insects, but are opportunistic and will eat other geckos if given the chance and the gecko it eats is small enough. For that reason, as long as the hermit crab is large enough that the gecko would not want to eat him, I’d say you are safe. However, if the gecko grows too much, I suppose it’s possible the crab could end up as lunch during a shell changing. Here’s a link for the gecko. http://www.ehow.com/facts_5806349_do-wild-geckos-eat_.html
