I too came to Fluther through a different portal. Wasn’t even looking for this kind of a site, but then I ended up on here and I’ve found it to be a very unique place.
It is certainly, foremost, a Q & A site, but it seems to be better than most, simply because of the way it is set up, in that you can get very immediate feedback, whereas some of the other sites kind of give you random answers or don’t answer the question completely, or you only get one answer.
With Fluther you may get 100 completely different answers for the same question, or you might get 99 answers that are almost identical, with slight nuances (that’s usually because the question has a pretty obvious answer that the questioner, called an OP for “original poster” just didn’t want to hear) Othertimes you will get some similar answers from about half the people, and the other half are completely all over the map (that’s usually with the religious and political questions).
As a group, most Flutherers are more left leaning, more liberal, and more agnostic or atheistic than your average group of folks. Not sure why this is, maybe it’s just the old adage of birds of a feather flocking together. But no one is discouraged from coming on Fluther, even if their views are not similar to the majority of members. We try to be open minded, and we try to allow all sorts of viewpoints, and we try not to purposely hurt people’s feelings or offend people. But sometimes it happens (from any perspective). What is not tolerated are explicit attacks on other members and I have a pretty good feeling that if you came on here and advocated for cannibalism or mandatory sterilization for all females, then you might get booted off by the moderators (the mods as we call them) or those types of people may end up saying something in a way that violates the standards of Fluther (which are fairly well documented in the “guidelines” section that you should read before you start participating.
On the other hand, Fluther is the perfect place to have a non-violent discussion about cannibalism and the possibility of mandatory sterilization for all females.
The NSFW designation (which you should use when discussing something of a sexual nature) is put on there, so if a question pops up when you are at work, it is a warning to you, not to look at it at work, because you can get fired for looking at sexual content at most places of business. Not Suitable For Work. There are all sorts of other icky kinds of topics that can be talked about without the NSFW designation, but anything that has to do with sex or sexual organs should get the NSFW designation. It’s also a nice gesture for Flutherers to put some sort of warning in their questions if they’re going to talk about disgusting sounding things that might make people’s tummies get upset (like poop and boogers and boils and insect guts etc.) just so that the squeamish can avoid looking at the question, or at least prepare themselves, mentally, before looking.
I don’t think Fluther was set up as a social networking kind of site, and it really doesn’t work like those kinds of sites. But it is indeed very social. That just happens because after you posted questions and gotten answers and answered questions and read other people’s answers, you will find that you have lots of things in common with some of the Jellies (another word for Flutherers or Members of Fluther). You also might learn a bunch of neat stuff that you never even thought about or considered before and that’s how you end up developing relationships with other Jellies. Also, after you read tons and tons of questions and answers, you get to know what kinds of personalities some of the Jellies have (some more than others, some more obvious than others) and you get to know what kinds of subjects everyone is interested in. Some people may seem like people you want to get to know better and some people you may want to avoid. If you want to get some specific information from any particular Jelly, you can certainly have the discussion with them right on the page with a question you were looking at, or you can click on any Jelly’s avatar and their profile will come up. Then you can PM (private message) them directly and wait for an answer. If you PM someone, you will see that there is a little box that is next to the button for sending your message that asks if you want your PM to be private (only seen by the Jelly you were sending the message to) or if you don’t mind, uncheck that box, and your PM can be seen by anyone who looks at that Jelly’s profile. I would guess that most PM’s are totally private, but some, especially when you are just discussing the facts of a recipe or where to buy something or how to build something, then having the PM available for everyone to look at can be useful.
I PM back and forth with a number of Jellies, but other Jellies take it a step further and invite them to go onto their Facebook accounts. I tend not to do that, because for me, the anonymity that Fluther provides, makes it much easier for me to be 100% honest and truthful with my answers, whereas I’d feel self conscious if anyone knew who I was in real life. I’m shy, so for me that would be an obstacle that I don’t want to have to overcome. So the Jellies on Fluther know me, but they don’t know who I am in real life and that’s OK for some of us, and others need and want to be known in their real lives too. Some of the Jellies have even met each other, which is pretty cool.
Thankfully there are 2 sections of Fluther. One that is General and one that is Social. The general section is there to simply get an answer, with no nonsense. The social side is where you can still get a very good straight answer, but you can also converse on a personal level with people and bring up other related or non-related topics on the same subject. And sometimes, we all get a little silly, and the social side is where we are allowed to do that, as long as we continue to follow the Fluther guidelines. Both the general and social sides can bring about extremely creative, well thought out, heartfelt and compassionate answers. You just can’t go off topic on the General side.
If you stick around for awhile, you will find out that there are a lot of really funny, really smart, really creative people on Fluther. Not every day and not always at the same time, but if you stick around you will experience profundity, and at times you will be brought to tears (either from laughter or from deep understanding and sorrow for shared experiences, or simply from compassion) Other times you will want to reach through the screen and throttle some of the Jellies for posting insensitive or mean-sounding answers. Some of that stuff gets modded off, if the poster violates the Fluther guidelines, but some of the stuff that sounds mean to one person, is the God’s honest truth to another person, so unless there is a specific attack or a violation of the guidelines, most of that stuff is allowed to be said and stays on the site.
Occasionally we get trolls, which you probably know are people that create “fake” or “multiple” accounts for the purpose of asking naughty questions, using bad language, making horrific statements against people, spamming or simply trying to gain negative attention towards themselves. It’s up to all of us to try to week those people out. The mods have a pretty good idea of who is a troll and who is not. If you’re not sure, but suspect that someone is a troll, you can and should Flag their question or response and then give a brief description to the mods as to why you think the person is a troll. This help the mods, who can’t read every single question or response.
The business with the mansions is simply a fun and silly thing that has been made up by all of us. A fictional place where we all get to go to when we’ve reached a certain amount of lurve (points for good Q’s and A’s and for sticking around and being helpful). Usually, by the time someone has gained enough lurve to “enter the mansion” as we say, we throw them a pretend virtual party and we try to let them know how much we appreciate them. Usually by then, you will know them well enough by what they have said, that you can give them “pretend” gifts and design “pretend” physical features to the “pretend” mansion that you think they will like. It’s all in fun, kind of like a roast, but not in a mean way, it’s meant to show the person how much you appreciate them, and we usually give examples.
There are also a lot of silly terms that get thrown around, for example frizzer and under the orange tree or The Yarnpocolypse that simply have to do with something one of the Jellies said at one time or another that a bunch of people thought was really funny and then those terms become part of the lexicon. It is considered a very high honor to get one of your terms immortalized into the Fluther lexicon. That hasn’t happened to me yet, only in my Frantasies!
Welcome : )
