Another silly question: why on earth does my cat do this?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) August 29th, 2011

My cat habitually licks one of the candles in our house. Just one. A big, red, cinnamon scented one. Can you think of any particular reason why she might be doing this? Could it be bad for her? Should I lick it and try and determine what the appeal is?

LOL, if you DO choose to lick it, disinfect it first. Cats carry worms and lick…um…everywhere down there.

Most scented candles are made with chemicals rather than essential oils. It’s possible she smells something differently in there than you do.

Your cat has a cinnamon fetish?

I can’t shake the image of you licking the candle ;-) And anything that appealed to you or repulsed you upon licking the candle would put you no closer to solving the mystery. I’m betting your kitty licks a lot of things you’d not touch with a 10-foot tongue. Silly kitty.

Is the candle by any chance made out of bees wax?

Your cat may be just bored. Watch her behavior closely. If she stops eating, drinking, pooping or peeing it would be a good idea to quickly take her to see a veterinarian to check her out. Mouth problems can cause a cat to suddenly change it’s behavior and or start acting weird. Tooth abscess, mouth epithelial cell infections, nasal polyps and carcinomas are common.

My cat suddenly became lethargic last Monday and stopped eating or drinking, The veterinarian opened her mouth and said “That’s the biggest oral tumor I’ve ever seen”. Then he said well it might be something else. Lucky for my cat and I, it turned out to be treatable. It was a nasty infected area loaded with puss. Last night she ate a little food for the first time in nearly a week. The vet visit cost me almost $400 but it likely saved her life.

This is just a guess cuz cats are such weird little creatures.

Cinnamon is sort of tangentially related to mint. And Mint is related to catnip so that may be part of the attraction.

I had one cat who would go nuts whenever she smelled me eating a peppermint Lifesaver. She would try to lick my mouth and if I’d opened my mouth I’m sure she would have grabbed it.

She also liked playing with the wrappers and would roll around like it was catnip. None of my other cats had that type of reaction. But they also did not go coockoo for catnip either.

@gondwanalon, I am glad your cat got medical attention. I hope she recovers fully. I thought about pica when I read the question, but @Mariah‘s cat is only licking the candle.

It’s so funny that I saw this question because my cat Deacon is obsessed with this cinnamon scented pinecone wreath I have for Christmas. I still can’t figure out why. However, just remember cats lick their own butts so licking things after them could be germy and gross.

Is your cat diabetic and trying to self-medicate?
I’m not actually serious. But it’d be pretty amazing if it were true.

Beats the hell out of me. My cat will lick anything like a plastic bag. They are weird creatures, no? ;)

Hahaha, don’t worry folks, I wasn’t being serious about licking the candle. Ick!

@Nimis Whoa, that would be pretty incredible, wouldn’t it? I wonder if diabetes is something that would get caught in a routine vet checkup? But she doesn’t show any signs of it, although she’s a little tubby. :)

I didn’t figure there was probably a reason behind it besides “cats are weird” but I figured I’d try. Thanks folks!
