What types of sweet treats can you make with basic kitchen ingredients?
What kinds of delicious snacks can you make with things like flour, baking soda, vanilla, sugar, and all of that other “basic” kitchen jazz?
I’m curious to know how many things you can actually make.

I think I would need to know more about what you consider basic kitchen jazz to help you out… I keep so much in my kitchen to cook with so it maybe very different than what you have
In the poverty years we would make homemade tortillas and fry the dough and dip them in a cinnamon and sugar mixture.
@creative1 Just the common kitchen ingredients. Flour, sugar, vanilla extract, peanut butter, salt, etc.
Peanut Butter Cookies mmmmmmm
Nothing is easier or freaking tastier than Rice Krispie Treats!
All you need is a little oil to cook them in and you can make donuts.
If I had some fish-shaped ethylbenzine (and lots and lots of rhubarb), I could bake a killer cake that’s not a lie :-p
@ cruiser I was going suggest that but not everyone has the marshmallows in stock so thats why I asked for specifics…
What can’t you make with that? Those are pretty much baking staples, you can make tons of stuff. And then you can send it to me. :)
You need butter and then you can make anything. Most baked goods start with creaming butter and sugar and then adding alternating dry (flour, baking powder or soda) and wet (milk, eggs, water) and then you’re rocking.
And the various pie crusts usually are made with the basic butter and flour or lard and flour chopped together and rolled out.
No bake cookies You’ll need oatmeal, cocoa and peanut butter among a couple other items you said you already have.
@chyna; But you also need butter for that recipe.
I think this qualifies. It only uses basic kitchen ingredients.
Dangerous 5 Minute Chocolate Mud Cake
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons vegitable oil
small splash of vanilla extract
1 Large Coffee Mug
Add dry ingredients to mug. Mix
Add egg. Mix thouroughly.
Pour in Milk and oil. Mix
Add Chocolate Chips. Mix
Add Vanilla. Mix
Microwave at 1000 watts for 3 minutes.
Don’t be alarmed if the cake rises above the rim of the mug.
Let cool. If desired, you can take cake out of the mug, onto a small plate.
Why is this recipe dangerous? Because from now on, you are only 5 minutes away from Chocolate Cake.
You can make almost any kind of cookies. They all have the same basic ingredients, just variations on additives (chocolate chips, nuts, or whatever) and sweeteners (brown sugar, white sugar, molasses) and maybe flavorings (vanilla, cinnamon).
Same with cakes, cupcakes, and quick breads (like banana bread). Heck, you can make your own ice cream with just milk, cream, and vanilla.
Whenever I want to bake something, I go to AllRecipes and browse through recipes. I do a search for cookies, click on the ones that sound good, and choose one that calls for ingredients I have on hand.
Our current favorite homemade cookie is the “No Chip Chocolate Chip Cookie.” Look up the original recipe for Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip cookies. Add an extra ¼ cup of flour, and use ½ cup butter and ½ cup Crisco in place of the full cup of butter. Leave out the chocolate chips, but otherwise prepare as the recipe says. Best. Cookies. Ever. People always think they have some kind of secret ingredient or something, but the ingredients are very basic. Just don’t over bake them!
I like to mix peanut butter, oatmeal, cocoa powder, and sugar. Vanilla, salt, peanuts, cardamom, nutmeg optional. Come to think of it, I’d add coconut if I had that.
You just need butter, sugar and vanilla to make English toffee. Adding nuts and chocolate melted on top makes it a real treat.
My Instant Chocolate Candy.
Milk(very little)
Powdered sugar
Teaspoon Vanilla
Tablespoon of Butter’
Hersheys Powdered Coca
Electric mixer
2 cups of powdered sugar poured into a bowl
5 rounded teaspoons of coca powder
Melt butter in microwave and pour over sugar
Pour in one teaspoon vanilla over sugar
Turn elect. mixer on low speed
Add a ¼ cup of milk until all is blended.
If you have used too much milk, add more pow. sugar.
Blend for about 3 minutes until the chocolate has a shiny appearance and begins to thicken
Continue blending and adding sugar, until thick and mixer really starts to labor or slow down.
It will be thick, but only thick enough to eat with a spoon.
Enjoy….
