What if you woke up tomorrow and everyone on the planet was hideous to look at?

Asked by digitalimpression (9923points) September 3rd, 2011

What would the ramifications be?
How would the world change?
By God, what would happen to Hollywood?

Does this include me? Is everyone aware of the change, or do they act as though it’s always been this way? In what way are we hideous, do we have pigs heads like The Twilight Zone, or are we just covered in boils?

I would just stop wearing my contacts/glasses. Problem solved.

@Prosb Everyone is ugly and they don’t know why its all different from yesterday. They have pig heads with boils on them.

@ANef_is_Enuf If they had pig heads I’m sure you’d notice a difference.. even if you were 90 percent blind.

I mean, I can only see an inch in front of my face without my contacts, quite literally. Even if I noticed, it would just be a larger flesh coloured blob than usual. I might notice, but I can’t see how I would be affected. I definitely wouldn’t be making out any features, like boils, from the smeary images. If you’ve ever had eyesight as bad as mine, you must know what I mean.
I would definitely make it a point not to touch anyone, because boils are contagious. :\

First thing, ointments sell out immediately everywhere. Most people hide their hideous-ness when going out in public at first. There are those who would flaunt it, but most are ashamed, even though everyone else looks the same. A dramatic change in clothing and things worn around your head. Cosmetic surgery becomes more popular then ever before. Eventually the world comes to terms with it’s new state of being, and are less horrified now that this is the norm. Future generations find things in each others appearance that they find attractive.
Meanwhile, constant research on how this happened goes on, the religious claim this as punishment from the divine, others say the end nears.

As for Hollywood, at first, the movies that already exist become extraordinarily more watched than anything new coming out. People don’t want to think about their appearance, and so watch movies that don’t bring this to light or point it out. A huge rift develops, between those who want movies to have actors act as usual, just having to deal with this new appearance they all have. The others want more CGI, so that movies have the same appearance.

I could go on, but I think I’ve said enough.

The norm would be redefined and in a week you wouldn’t even remember what it was like before. That and I would start getting laid more.

Would they look so bad after 2AM?

marinelife's avatar

That is the premise of a classic Twilight Zone episode called The Eye of the Beholder.

@Prosb My initial reaction was that beauty products and plastic surgery would decline and die. You’re right of course, us humans aren’t too bright. In fact, all new products would likely emerge promising the reduction of boils and shrinking of heads to normal size with 12 easy payments of 19.99.

@marinelife really? interesting.. i must watch this now.

I would visit a neurologist and get an MRI. :P

I’d have to assume I woke up in Scotland! ;¬}

As you say, we all wake and notice there is a change to what we uni formally consider to be . hideous? Oh wow, we’d all have some pretty big issues with our relationships and forming new ones. I’m not sure how many years it takes for people to overcome the responses they’ve developed.

I would think the plot from the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson have come into reality! : )

I’d give everyone a makeover. For free!!

smilingheart1's avatar

I have prepared myself by ceasing to look at my own ever deflating image in the looking glass.

lonelydragon's avatar

That’s the premise of Daphne du Maurier’s short story “The Blue Lenses.”

@lonelydragon Hmm. Where can I find that at?
