Is it really ok if I name my dogs after friends I admire?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29264points) September 4th, 2011

I told my 91 year old gentleman friend that I would name my future dog after him. And that I would get a golden retriever since it reminds of him. Gentle, magnanimous and kind. He said it would honor him. Is that really ok-?

If you’re both fine with it, I don’t see why not. My mother gave me two middle names. One runs in my family, the other is the name of a friend she was close enough to have used their name in the name of her first child. She had a fight with them, and hasn’t seen or spoken to them for over fifteen years. Go figure.

Sure. Especially in the situation you describe, I don’t see a problem with it.

Well,it was ok with me when my sister named her dog after me.I wanted to kick her butt for other reasons.:)
My nephew named a squirrel Aunt “Lucille”.No problem there either.
My grandfather, father and brother all share the same name and I carried on the tradition by naming one of my dogs after them. XD

I think it’s better to name a dog after a friend than to have the friend’s name be the dog’s command to play dead (which is a raucous party trick, by the way).

Yes. And try to put them together in the same room [-if you can] and see if they get along.

Sure. Why not? If your friend would be honoured, then I don’t think you have to wonder if it’s “really ok”.

Why not?

I personally don’t like dogs having people names, but a lot of people do it.

Both parties agree its a good idea. Its unanimous.

I’m with @marinelife on this one. I don’t usually like the idea.. however, in this case it actually seems to be awesome. I’m all over the charts on this one.

We tease my niece about having named two of her young sonsafter my daughter’s cats (Milo the first and Leo.) Aged 7, Milo is thrilled. We’ll learn more from Leo when he learns to talk.

My paternal grandfather named his parrot Adolph, but this was before 1933.

I personally wouldn’t want anyone to name their pet after me, but if he thinks it would be an honour for him then what’s the harm? Go for it.

I have a dog that I wished to call Henry. The name has a euphonious sound, and carries well, – I can imagine myself yelling, “Hen-n-n-n-n-ry!!!” My daughter did not like it and now he is Bruno. Why Henry? he looks like a Henry (as Henry in the Richmal Crompton books).

Sure! My brother’s best friend named his new dalmation puppy after me.

Just so long as you don’t choose a name that the dog would be embarrassed to own. (there are many). How can you tell? Simple, they’ll never respond to it.

I personally don’t give my pets human names I try to be creative but its up to you, if you truly like this guy and if he said it would honor him then there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s all about personal choice:)

@WillWorkForChocolate I just keep thinking about a dalmation named Chocolate . . .
