Is it okay to wear white after Labor Day? If so, what?

I am not sure where this idea came from, but for years a lot of people have abided by “no white after Labor Day”. I wear white tennis shoes year ‘round. Question: in white, what’s taboo and what’s acceptable to wear after Labor Day?
