Has anyone else here trained as a Midwife?

Asked by BeccaBoo (2725points) September 6th, 2011

I am currently “In Training” and still have a while to go, but I am finding it amazing that it’s not all what I first thought.

I struggled through school and found sitting in lessons so boring, although I scraped through my exams with passes (god knows how I did) I am finding all of this fascinating.
I love the psychology modules and the Bio-science.

Have you done this or are you qualified, I would love to know your experiences and thoughts.

I did not take midwife training, but I had 4 home births (yeah, I’m kind of hard core). PM me for the details if you wish.

I have no official midwife training, but I have been trained to deliver a baby. (I would crap my britches if I ever had too). :)

My wife is a maternity nurse but refused midwife training because she didn’t want to become that closely involved. Although she has delivered more than her share of babies, she tries not to make it a habit.

It is possible that you jumped into midwife training too soon. I know a couple of midwives that were formerly Registered Nurses working in the maternity ward. I suggest that you ease into the profession because the only good midwifes, I know are enthusiastic about helping mothers and children start out well in life. If it is just a chore for you, you have probably chosen the wrong profession and you will not be happy in your work.

A midwife, to me is a very special person. They are doing what they want and are dedicated to the success of their patients.

@Ron_C No definatly not jumped into this too soon, I am loving it, as long as I can remember it’s all I ever wanted to do, but my career path took quite a different turn, as I had my first son very early and needed to get into work and pay the bills. I am just kicking myself that I didn’t do this years ago!!

I think you may have mis-read my question, this is not a chore for me and I am not struggling with this, I did mention in the question that I stuggled while I was at school, but that was over 20 years ago when I was young and silly.

I just wondered if there was anyone else out there that had done the training and could offer some advice.

I’m trained as a Doula – which is a midwife or childbirth assistant sort of. I found the education pretty amazing too. So happy I have those skills now.

I completed nurse midwifery training in 1978, and worked as a CNM Certified Nurse Midwife for nearly 30 years before transitioning into my current career as a GYN nurse practitioner. Much as I loved working with pregnant women, I eventually reached an age where the frequent all-nighters for labor and birth were taking too much out of me. I do miss it but menopausal and contracepting women need midwives too.
