How to stop hidden ads from blasting through the speakers while surfing online?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) September 6th, 2011

Sometimes, while surfing online, I’ll come across these annoying, hidden ads, where I can’t discover where the noise source is coming from. I’ve looked all over the page but no dice. The only way to stop it is to close the tab or browser.

I’m assuming there’s no way to put a stop to it?

Honestly, stop visiting sites that produce those. They are more than likely decking your computer down with spyware everytime you visit them. Legitimate sites will not use ad’s such as this.

If they are legitimate sites (like yahoo or something), then more than likely you have spyware on your computer from some previous excursion to a questionable site.

What I did was edit the windows hosts file to stop web browsers from resolving ad servers (as well as a load of domains that are known to host malicious code). Result – alot of empty spaces where the ads used to be.

If you use Firefox get Adblock Plus and Flashblock.

I keep my sound turned off at all times, unless I specifically turn it on for something. I was surprised to even find out there was all that noise on the computer.

Late reply, but this comment may be helpful to any other people who view this article. I let the video load all the way (when using things such as videoweed and megavideo) then I put my browser into offline mode and watch the preloaded video. Hope I helped.

I was frustrated because I had no idea how to try what Lightlyseared suggested (wish he’d explain) but I have a great way that worked as soon as I thought of it. I have this bookmarklet that lets me edit almost any web page as i view it (it isn’t permanent, obviously). You can get it here: http://lifehacker.com/398139/edit-any-web-page-with-a-bookmarklet
I dragged it into my Bookmarks bar, opened the tab with the ads (in my case it’s movshare.com), selected the bookmarklet, and then highlighted the two video ads with my cursor and hit “Delete” on my keyboard.
I don’t know if I can recall having experienced anything more satisfying than that.
