Why am I suddenly hiccuping so much?

Asked by Supacase (14573points) September 6th, 2011

I very rarely get hiccups. Or, that was the case until a few months ago. Now I get them about 3 times a week, usually just as I am about to fall asleep. One night during vacation I had them while asleep. My 5 y/o finally got up to give me a drink of water so she could get some sleep.

Any ideas?

use your finger to rum the roof of your mouth front to back

Drinking water upside down fixes it each time. I just can’t figure out why it is happening so often. I’ve probably had the hiccups as many times in the past 3 months as I’ve had in 20+ years prior.

what do you do before going to bed?

@abysmalbeauty Nothing new. Sometimes it starts while I’m brushing my teeth, sometimes right after sex, sometimes just before I drift off (which really annoys me). It has even started while getting onto the bed. I can’t find a pattern.

hmm seems like all of those activities could easily result in swallowing air. try keeping your mouth closed when you go to sleep?

I hiccup when I am not drinking enough water.

It is something to bring up with your doctor, as you and your family have noticed this change.

It can be as simple as something you are doing to irritate your diaphragm or something more serious (like a tumor or the beginning of a nerve condition)

I used ot hiccup a lot as a teen/twenty something. It always seemed that once I got hiccups and got rid of them, I’d have them at least once or twice again the same day. I’ve found yogic breathing help mine go away quickly.

Apparently a sudden shock can rid you of them. I don’t know if tha…....Jesus Christ what’s that behind you!!!
