I need some good "brain" food (for studying). Suggestions?

Asked by Jude (32207points) September 7th, 2011

If I don’t have proper nutrition, I can’t think well/retain. I need healthy suggestions to get me through the busy school year ahead.

Keeping my day relatively low-carb goes a long way in keeping my mind clear. When I eat too many carbs, I get all fuzzy.

Here are some snack suggestions: cashews, almonds, apple with peanut butter, apple with sharp cheddar, Fage 2% plain Greek yogurt.

Had me some almonds this morning.

Keep hydrated. For some reason drinking enough water is very helpful. Also ever since I’ve quit smoking I’ve been very very top of my game. That is if you are a smoker. And in my country almonds and walnuts are literally considered brain food, in that they boost your memory and that. Don’t know how true that is.

I agree with all of the above. For me, it’s espresso, protein and water. In that order, to keep my brain working without any cobwebs!

Protein, protein, protein!

Protein is brain food.

What makes the best brain food for me is stuff that takes a little thought to make and covers most or all of the major food groups. Try putting some different ingredients together and see how things go. Taking a couple minutes to prepare something gives your brain a nice break, and yet, putting something a little different together gets my creative juices flowing.

I just had a piece of pumpernickel bread with a wedge of laughing cow cheese, tomato slices and garlic salt sprinkled on top. It was filling, delicious, covered all the major food groups for a vegetarian and didn’t weigh me down or make me feel sluggish.

That sounds like heaven.

Tastes like it too. :)

Tomatoes, tuna and oatmeal and green tea to wash it down with. Hell just make a smoothie out of all 4 and you be real smart!

Is there such a thing? Don’t most students use stimulants to keep their brains sharp for studying? And doesn’t it work? Isn’t that the appeal of “energy” drinks like Red Bull?

Jude's avatar

@wundayatta I’m not putting that shit in my body.

Glucose for a quick boost followed by complex carbs to keep blood sugar levels consistently high. Your brain runs on glucose – intense studying has a significant, noticeble effect on blood sugar levels and low blood sugar levels can lead to a significant deterioration in attention abilities (actual studies have been performed). But be warned, neurones can’t store glucose so they need a steady supply from complex carbs. If you just have simple carbs you get a quick boost but as most of it will be stored in the body and result in a drop in blood glucose and so a drop in brain power.

@Lightlyseared Wonderful. Thank-you. From that info, could you mention a few food items? My brain would do it, if it could, right now. ;)

Have a sufficient amount of water. Eat fruits that you like. You’ll stay energized and healthy!

Second @Lightlyseared. Some carbs for right away energy and something starchy or proteiny for energy in a little bit. Peanut butter on crackers or apple slices, trail mix, fruit and yogurt.

Thanks!

I would say eat colorful vegetables since their each of their colors represent different nutrition for your brain. Eat brown rice since it will help your brain to regain energy for long time without having to eat so often. Eat molasses in stressful situation to help your brain to combat the pain. Actually, the more varied your food every day the better you would be. Just stay away from alcohol since they’re bad for your beloved brain.

Sardines. They’re cheap and nutritious.

I also find that taking high potency fish oil capsules help a lot with my concentration and ability to focus, and B-vitamins help with dealing with stress.

I know this this may not be food, but is you like to listen to music when you study, don’t listen to that screamo shit. Listen to clasical, or my favorete, Andrea Bocelli.
