Can some Android Geeks please help me out?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) September 7th, 2011 from iPhone

A friend of mine just got an Android Tablet and asked me to help him set it up.

So I headed over to Google Android Marketplace and see if I could get some useful Apps.

I figured Google Maps was necessary and free. However, in order to download it, I had to put in my Gmail addy and username cuz it wanted a Google acct. with which to register it.

However, it then refused to go further since “there is no Android phone for this acct.”

Well, there never will be since I have an iPhone and he has a no-name throwaway with no monthly plan.

Have I totally screwed this up. What do I do now? Is there anyway I can totally disconnect my Gmail Acct. from this and just start over from scratch?

And will the Android market continue to be inaccessible since there is no phone and there apparently is not a serial number or whatever on the device.

BTW. It’s an Impression Tablet, if that makes any diff.

Please help. Thanks.

Is there a way to delete the app from your gmail account?

AFIK the App is not in my acct. It wouldn’t download. But I’m on my iPhone now so I’ll check my Gmail just to be sure.

Nope. Not in my Gmail.

But that’s not my biggest concern right now. Evidently my Gmail addy is associated with his tablet. I’m hoping that can be undone.

Go to settings > Accounts and see if your gmail account is in there.

@Buttonstc If it was refused what is the problem? Have him sign up for a Gmail account. A tablet with an a person with an email doesn’t make sense to me.

@Buttonstc Also, everything on your google account can be accessed on your account

Isn’t there a Market on the device?

@dreamwolf

I agree. It makes no sense either. I’m sure there are plenty of tablet owners who don’t have an Android phone.

He told me that he signed up for Gmail and tried it with using his phone number. Evidently that’s how they send you a text to download it. But he did not receive the text.

@monkey

I wouldn’t call it a Market. There are about a half dozen or so Apps to which the owner of the device is entitled but that’s it.

But it’s Google which controls the regular Android Marketplace which is presumably open to all with an Android OS, right?

He’s going to call the device mfg to find put what’s going on.

It makes no sense that one must have an Android phone specifically. That’s ridiculous.

But this little debacle makes me certain that I’ll likely get an ipad when I get the backs together for a tablet :)

Anyhow, verybody gets lurve for trying to help me sort out this mess.

If he figures it out, I’ll update in case other Android pad users stumble upon this Q. Thanks

I’ve not use the tablet, but I know that from my Android phone I can go to Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. I think that would erase everything, including your account on his tablet. Of course, the downside to this is that anything he has on there (customizations, other apps, etc.) would have to be reinstalled. The good news is he could set it up with his Google account. Also, if he doesn’t get text messages (though I’m not sure why he wouldn’t, he has a cell phone, right?) he could get a Google Voice account and have texts sent there.

@Allie

I’ll suggest getting a Google Voice acct. to him. Do they give you a separate phone number for it or can you use your own cell phone number?

Thanks for that suggestion.

OK, so the tablet doesn’t have the official Market app, which suggests that they don’t play ball with Google in some way. It also runs 2.2, which will likely make for an unusual interface.

Anyway, the way to get apps on to the tablet is to “sideload” them. This means downloading the .apk file from a web-based source and dropping it on to the tablet’s SD card or internal memory.

You will also need to ensure that the phone is set to handle non-Market apps:

* Main menu > Settings > Applications > Unknown sources > Check

This will allow you/your friend to install downloaded .apk files.

You can google online android repositories to find apps.

I wouldn’t let this tablet put you off Android tabs, though – that one is cheap for a reason. A proper Android tab should run 3.0 (latest version is 3.1) as 2.2 is a cellphone interface, and you should double check that the tab has an official Market app before you buy.

Wow. Thank you for that info. That is so helpful. I’m going to show this to him directly and let him figure it out himself.

He said he’s going to call cust. Svc. since he has other Qs also.

I figured there must really be something out of whack if I couldn’t even get Google Maps (free) on it.

That’s REALLY “not playing nice with Google” to put it mildly.

If/when I get an Android Tablet, I’ll definitely keep your info in mind and make certain that it’s running the latest Android OS.

Or maybe I’ll just keep it simple and get an Ipad. But that would pretty much be a duplication since I already have iPhone. And I’d still be stuck having to haul out a computer everytime I encounter a website with Flash links or content with Flash. Grrrr.
