What should I bring on my road trip?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) September 9th, 2011 from iPhone

I am going on a road trip to Tennesee this weekend with 2 of my friends.

What kinds of things should I bring to ensure the ride there is fun? Also, what are some good snacks to bring?

Travel sized board games. I recommend Scrabble.

The Dragunov.

Your favorite snacks, music, games, and maybe some happy brownies.
For after you’re off the road, of course. ;-)

Last time I was in Tennessee I was glad I had this and my dog with me.
Stopped at a rest area and had two cars full of miscreants park on either side of me. Not sure what they were planning, but the sight of my dog popping up when they banged on the roof of my truck or my .45 laying in plain sight on the seat beside me changed their minds.

Are you coming to Memphis?! Make sure you see Graceland, but stay on the beaten path it is a not so great part of town. In fact, be safe in general on any driving trip. Stick together, drive during daylight hours if you can. When you pump gas you lock your car doors if you leave your purse on the seat. Check your back seat before you get back into your car (you should always be doing this anyway in any place that has some crime, even where you might live.

As far as the drive, bring your favorite snack foods and some wet wipes so you don’t get the car greasy or full of Dorito orange. I do recommend stopping to eat, get out stretch, take a break. It is good to stand every couple hours, healthier, safer. However, in TN, you should plan your stops a little in advance, you don’t want to get out in the hood. Seriously if you will be in or near Nashville maybe ask johnpowell, although he might scare you to death because he is a cop, if I haven’t already, lol. Downtown Nashville near the university is very safe. I can help you near Memphis.

You’ll need Ozium Air Freshener ; ) ; ) – never leave home without it.

Good car snacks include nuts, bite-sized chocolate (like M7Ms or Hershey’s Kisses), fruit (apples are good).

Be sure and pack your sunglasses, your camera, some shorts.

Bring a credit card for use if the car breaks down. Otherwise have enough funds to make it to your destination and back.

I’d take my gun in case you end up “on the wrong side of the tracks.”

I’d also take an iPod full of music, or an iTouch or iPhone would work wonders with all the games. Magazines in case people get tired of playing.

I think that settles it. And my fave road snacks are nature valley granola bars (oats n honey), beef jerkey, and donuts. LOL

Don’t bring a gun through Illinois unless you want a new jumpsuit fitting :/

Take along a pad of blank paper, some sharpened pencils and some LSD. Maybe you can invent a Fluther®™ board game. Take some binoculars for when it’s your turn to drive.

Be sure and bring back some moonflowers, though.

Don’t eat without a drink nearby. We don’t need anyone choking.

Bring a case of beer, and a couple fifths of Vodka. the rest is secondary.

Make sure you have plenty of music for the car. I like to make a special mix tape/CD for road trips that are about the time of year and where I am going and the route I am taking. If you can play an iPod on the car speakers, it’s easy with a special playlist.

If you have to drive through Illinois, just disassemble it and throw it in the trunk. see !!!

Counterintuitive I know, but at least you can have it for the non commie states… (juuuuust kidding, I know how sensitive people are on here)

P.S. This is an awesome website. So keep it for more than just this trip!

A portable dungeon :-p

pick up a whiskey barrel at Jim Beam in KY and then fill it with the best Bourbon you can from TN.

Ice is the perfect snack then. Plenty of ice, yeah, thats it…ICE

Mad Libs are a must for any long road trip.

@mrrich724 Ha…It’s illegal to have a gun if you have a hoodie on? Hmmm, sounds racist to me.

JLeslie's avatar

Along with what @blueiiznh said you can go to where they make Jack Daniels in TN, but don’t drink it until you are out of the county. It is made in a dry county.

mrrich724's avatar

@woodcutter it gets pretty ridiculous sometimes. Shit, I’m a white male, I work in the HR department for a national healthcare company and I wear hoodies when it gets cold . . .

Ridiculous.

Did anyone think to bring a map?

blueiiznh's avatar

@woodcutter a map means you have to follow a path. love spontaneous trips to knowhere.

CWOTUS's avatar

@blueiiznh

It’s not that you have to be dictated to by it, but having a map is a nice way to know-where you are or how to get to where you need to be when you need that information.

woodcutter's avatar

For real, just fold it up and stash it somewhere until you finally admit to yourselves that you are lost.

JLeslie's avatar

I agree with the map idea. Nothing is like a map. GPS is not the same.

woodcutter's avatar

Maps rule, until the day you gotta have batteries for them.

blueiiznh's avatar

A driver would be the next best thing. raises hand, pick me, pick me

woodcutter's avatar

Yeah get a driver up in here so I can just sit and look out the window.
