How can I get everything done and have time to relax?

Asked by laineybug (5331points) September 9th, 2011

It’s my freshman year of high school , which means a heavier workload than last year. I’m also in marching band which takes up a lot of my time with practices every Tuesday and Thursday along with games, competitions, and other events almost every weekend. I have to study and I have to practice, but I also need communication with my best friends, none of whom I have classes with. I’ve barely seen them since the end of last year, and I miss them. On top of that, I need some down time so I don’t just fall over from exhaustion. How can I deal with this? Is there any good way to organize my schedule so that I can fit all of this in?

I learned this in college. Lucky you. Wake up early. Sunday nights, write down your schedule. Successful people write everything down. Chalkboard it, whiteboard it, planner it. Make it your priority. It’s tough, but the waking up early part is the only hard part. Getting organized early on is a hard practice, but its one you will never not need. :D

Don’t schedule anything for Sundays. Let it be your day of rest. Plan ahead for the week to come. Organize your clothes and books, etc. Make lunches ahead of time.

No idea. I’m freaking out right now with how much I have to do.

How crucial is marching band? Is dropping it an option?

@Brian1946 Marching band is very important to me. It’s the only thing I’ve been this committed to in a few years now and I will not drop the class or the practices.

Yeah writing lists is an absolute winner. Stuff like cooking up a huge meals eg. lasagne and freezing it is good. Then you only have to defrost it. Saves time and money on evening meals but you’re still eating well. As for down time, if you read, I find just 30–40 mins just before you sleep with a good book is the best way to wind down. Sounds lame and for old people but you’ll sleep better and feel like you’ve had “you” time everyday it also stops me having crazy dreams, you know like those ones where you’re in the next day and everything goes wrong?!

It only gets harder to manage your time after high school, so make sure you don’t give up on this question! LOL

Shoot, I thought high school was hard too, I was in honors and A/P classes, and I wrestled. Wrestling lasted ‘til 7 PM and took up all day Saturday. I thought it was tough.

Then came life, and now high school seems like a breeze. . . just a heads up.

Another vote for a planner and lists. Make sure your homework assignments for each day are written down and that you have all of your band practices and events in that calendar. And a place for tracking projects would be helpful. I think that a 3 ring binder with a few tabs and some calendar pages would work. While you’re doing that, I would also see if the time that you have allotted is correct. Maybe history takes more time, but math takes less; you can make adjustments. Once you have an idea of how assignments, practicing and band will take, you can start to work in the friend communication a little better. They’ll forgive you for being random at first! And absolutely make sure you have some recharge time every day. Meditation, yoga, or just sitting in a quiet place are a few ideas.

It will take some time, but you will get there!

This is a bit counterintuitive, but if you slow down whatever you are doing slightly (even a walk to the bus-stop) and you will enjoy it more. Then, you will be able to relax while doing.

Also, rather than see your phone calls and keep up with friends as a burden, see it as a point of refreshment. And there may also be times where you need time out for yourself alone. I know that I definitely need those.

The most important thing for me when I am hyper-busy is to write it all down in a planner; then, reassured that everything is organised, I just plunge into it, enjoying the busyness.

First relax, then see what you can get done.
