What do you make of this job situation?

I’ve been looking for a part-time nights/weekends job for a little over a month. I’m a college student with bills to pay, so I’m getting pretty desperate.

I had an interview on Tuesday at a car dealership for a office assistant position and I was told they’d call me, so I’m waiting on that. Well, on Wednesday, I got a call from Lowe’s offering an interview on Thursday. I went, and was told this by the HR lady:

“This is how the hiring process goes: First, you’ll interview with me, and then you’ll interview with [some other lady]. We’ll make a decision, call you for a drug test, and make the offer from there.”

I did both interviews that day, and they went pretty well. This morning they called me in for the drug test. I went in (and yes, I will pass it) and was told this by the same lady:

“I’ll give you a call when we get the results back to make the offer.”

So, it sort of sounds like a done deal. But when I got there, she was flustered and said she’d been doing these tests every 30 minutes since 9AM. At this time, it was 4PM, and I saw a stack of applicant forms on her desk. So, I casually asked her if they were filling more than one position. She says:

“Oh yeah, a bunch. That’s what I’ve been doing all week—hiring. We’re hiring an assistant manager, store manager, three [some other position], seven cashiers (the position I applied for)...” and a few other things.

I asked if a bunch of people recently quit, and she told me that they had to let “a lot of people go”.

My first thought—new management wiped everyone out. But then, they’re hiring a manager, so that doesn’t fit. I’m not sure that many people could get fired on their own doing all at once. I really need a job, and the pay there is good, but I’m worried that I’ll take the offer and they’ll wipe everyone out again in a few months.

I shouldn’t not take the job for this reason, right? I mean, I need it. But this just sounds really fishy.

What would you make of that if you were in my shoes and what would you do?

If you do take the job, there is no reason you can’t keep looking for another one.

And this time of year decent paying part time jobs are hard to come by in university towns.

@WestRiverrat Looking for a job while I’m at school from 8–3:30 five days a week has been nearly impossible. Doing it when I’m working nights and weekends…yeah, I just don’t have the time for it. Between school and work, filling out applications is something I don’t want to stress about.

They probably aren’t hiring a whole slew of new people for just one store, unless they had exceptionally severe criminal activity, such as organized looting and / or embezzlement with management abetting the crimes. Especially, management positions are often hired in groups, then run through training, where some will wash out or find other employment anyway, and the ones who complete the training will then go on a rotation among several stores to get more experience in different departments and with different managers and teams of employees. Some will wash out there, too.

Finally, they will have a small cadre of more-or-less experienced “assistant managers”, and they will work them like dogs, where more will find other jobs more to their liking. After many months – maybe even years – as various store managers retire or leave for other reasons, other store managers will be rotated into positions and stores that they like better, and finally one or two assistant managers will be promoted to the least desired stores in the district or region.

As for the other positions and people that were “let go”, it may have been something as simple as institution of a neglected drug screening across all employees (say, if accidents had been increasing recently, or the tests simply hadn’t been done in a long time and people got sloppy), and a relatively larger “catch” of lower-level (maybe even management) people were caught up in that and fired all at once.

The chain may also be expanding. Some businesses are, even in this economy.

Since you’re only interested in part-time work anyway, and assuming you’re a good egg, I wouldn’t hesitate a moment if I were you and an attractive offer were made.

I’m sorry to say:
Car dealerships are not great places to work. They tend to go through staff like water. They notoriously treat their staff badly, pay poorly and tend to keep piling on the work due to the constant turn-over.

If Lowe’s calls, take the job!

Otherwise waitress, bartend, clean homes/banks, or find something else.

@SpatzieLover I actually know someone who works for this particular dealership. They’re good people and the pay is pretty decent. Most of the people there have been there years. Unfortunately, the serving jobs just didn’t work out. And I’d prefer a steady paycheck so I don’t have to constantly stress about making enough tips. I did apply to a bunch of restaurants though. Nothing. I thought about the cleaning thing, more like banks/companies rather than homes, but I could never find any companies hiring.

If only “find something else” was as easy as it sounds. It’s never taken me this much time to find a job—ever. So frustrating. If I do get the offer from Lowe’s, I’m definitely taking it. It’s definitely better than nothing.

@livelaughlove21 Are there any temp agencies in your area that are hiring?

I live in a college town. When I worked at the theater we would have a lot of people that wanted drop down to a shift a week because school was starting. We would tell them to move along.

So maybe they needed to replace a lot of people that are starting school and the person you talked to worded it poorly.

I worked for a security Co a few years ago, and our job was to do security checks for (large chain store) and we once discovered an organized theft ring that included 18 store employees including the store Manager, assistant manager, and three department heads. They all got fired the same day. So their could be a logical reason for a bulk hire.
