Best phone to switch to Android from iPhone?

Asked by Lost_World (1231points) September 12th, 2011

Well, I have been using the iphone platform since it came out, and I figured i’d like to try something different. Any recommendation as to a good phone to get, the HTC Evo 3D is the most appealing I have found so far.

Also is now a good time to switch?

I think some of Samsung Galaxy S series, or the new Galaxy Note, are a good idea.

New iPhone is supposed to be available in the next two months if that interests you, and rumored to be available on Sprint as well if it’s a consideration.

As for switching, I’ve heard good things about the HTC phones and the Droid phones from Motorola.

It really comes down to personal preference, it would be best to visit a store and play with each to see what “clicks” for you. Go play with them and pick your favorites, go home and look up what people complain about with that particular phone (people can always find something to complain about), if those things aren’t critical to you then you have a winner.

By the way, if you plan to develop for Android, I have to warn you, it’s A PAIN. Because Java.

If you can wait for a few months I would. Ice Cream Sandwich is rumored to be released in the next few months. That really shouldn’t matter but Android phone producers and carriers seem to stop caring about you once they get your money.

Eric Schmidt said, “We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone’s really excited about.”

I’m an ex-Android user who currently has the iPhone 4. I would love to go back to Android, but I’m waiting for Android to offer an acceptable phone. Start doing your research now and list the features you absolutely need. I “need” vanilla Android (no Motoblur or other crap), 4.5” screen, good battery life, “soft” back/home/menu buttons (unlike Droid X), led indicator.

I have the HTC Inspire (which is equivalent to the HTC Thunderbolt and HTC Evo). I like it a lot; the screen is huge and beautiful, the 8 MP camera works great, the 4G is very fast, the way the phone functions is not too different from the iPhone (I had an iPhone 3G S before I switched to the Inspire).

Of course, I’m probably going to switch to the iPhone 5 when it comes out…but I haven’t made up my mind yet :)

It really depends on what you want/need. Personally, I prefer a slim touchscreen model over those with keyboards and have no use for a front-facing camera, but your tastes may differ.

Unlike @tom_g, I like the Droid X because it has hard buttons for those functions, and the version of MotoBlur it uses is far less obnoxious than previous versions… assuming you even keep it ;)

But without knowing what you want in a phone, it’s nearly impossible to make a recommendation.

I recommend:

1. Samsung Galaxy S II
2. HTC Sensation

This is a very good comparison site:

I have an HTC EVO and really like it. I’ve heard mixed reviews re: the EVO 3D, even from people at the Sprint Store. The 3D technology isn’t getting much love from the developers, thus there aren’t many apps utilizing it. I’ve also heard great things re: the Samsung Galaxy S series.

Like everyone else has stated: make a list of your needs, would likes, and don’t care abouts. Don’t disregard the carrier. Having a phone with 4g doesn’t do any good if your area doesn’t get 4g. Blazing-fast downloads don’t matter if your data plan severely limits how much you can download.

Then go find the phone/carrier.

I have the regular EVO and I love it. The only moderate complaint is battery life. It blows the iPhone 4 out of the water imo (it beat’s it on a few specs, most notably the camera, but mostly its an operating system preference). I tried a few EVO 3D’s before getting the EVO and I didn’t like them, they gave me a headache.

The Nexus S 4G is supposed to be the latest king sh*t in Android phones, and it’s devoid of all of the add on crap that companies like Sprint or Verizon put on phones (Seriously, when am I doing to watch NASCAR on my phone???). It was my 2nd choice phone and honestly only lost out cuz it cost so much more.

(Keep in mind as has been pointed out, 4G is great, but it’s not nationally universal yet, and it will drain your battery)

I recommend this cell phone. There is no pesky touch screen to deal with and the buttons are nice and soft.

You can Dual-Boot IOS and Andriod on the iPhone.

jerv's avatar

@XOIIO I haven’t seen any of those things on the iPhone 4; only the older models. Not to mention that it’s not a flawless port (some things don’t work right), and a bit of hacking to get it to work at all. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the OP is up for that challenge.

I’ve got a Droid X2 that I would definitely recommend if you don’t mind the girth. It’s a big phone, but if you don’t mind the size I’d say it’s the best phone on Verizon at least, especially for the price.

jerv's avatar

The Droid Bionic is worth a look. Here is one review. And if you want the quickest software updates, Motorola phones are better than any other Android phones.

@dverhey Considering that the X2 has a 4.3” screen, it’s pretty small. My Droid X (same size as it’s successor) fits comfortably in my pocket and is actually a little small for my hands. However, my wife has little hands and has an easier time with the Droid 2 while I find that the small screen makes me squint too often and the phone itself is way too thick; the price one pays for having a slide-out keyboard.
I agree that the X2 is a great phone for the price (far cheaper than the Bionic) and would also recommend it to any smartphone shopper who doesn’t mind the lack of a slideout keyboard.
