What should be on the menu at a baby shower?

Asked by abysmalbeauty (2739points) September 12th, 2011

I’m hosting an afternoon baby shower for my sister in 2 weeks. Its at 2pm. What should be on the menu? I’ll be doing all of the cooking side from the cake and there is a guest list of approx 30 people.

Beschuit met muisjes [bəˈsxœyt mɛt ˈmœyʃəs]. Wiki
That is something that (almost) all Dutch new parents treat their guests.
Maybe it is a nice thing to surprise them with.

A baby shower is mostly about people walking around, talking and playing games so you don’t have to do any foods more complicated than something that can be eaten in one bite. I followed the inspirations on this site when I hosted my friend’s shower for the mini sliders, sausages and hummus finger sandwiches. I also had fresh fruit and veggie trays and a pitcher of sparkling lemonade.

As long as you don’t have to make the cake, keep it simple for a between-meals, afternoon party.

Homemade buttermilk biscuits. It’s unusual and they will love it. It’s truly different and a good surprise for everyone.

WalMart has them frozen.

Pizza rolls, mini tacos, veggie platter, cheese and meat platter, chips and dips. Little smokie sausages in BBQ sauce, brownies. Ice cream for the cake.

Depends on the group. Is everyone American? I’ll assume yes. How about:

Chicken salad
Mixed green salad with apples, walnuts, and raspberry vinaigrette,
Cold orzo with spinach and light olive oil,
I guess some choice of bread
Salmon croquettes or crab cakes

Orange juice and mimosas
Various soft drinks and/or iced tea
Hot tea and coffee

However, since it is at 2:00 maybe you are not really planning in feeding them a meal, but more appetizer oriented?

I would still have the mimosas and other drinks, maybe a couple dips, chips, pita, bagel,
hummus,
mini kabobs
toast tips, cream cheese or creme fraiche and smoked salmon.
Stuffed mushrooms
Or, the filo dough finger foods stuffed with spinach or mushrooms.

Or, if you are clear to people it is a dessert party, which you can do because of the time of day, you can do a Viennese table with:

Petit fours
Mini linzer torte
Lemon squares
Brownies
Mini pecan pie squares
And a fruit compote or fruit salad
With coffees and teas.
