What's an easy to use website builder?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) September 13th, 2011

I know how to use computers, but I don’t know what makes them work. I know how to use the Internet, but I don’t know anything about HTML.

I’m trying to find a website builder that is easy to learn and is free. I already have the domain name. I already have a website, but it was built with a free template supplied by the web hosting site, which was super easy to figure out and is unbelievably easy to maintain. My only real complaint is it’s unimaginative.

I’ve heard of Joomla, and I’ve seen a lot of sites built with it that are very nice. Honestly, they lost me on the second youTube video of instructions, and there were nine more after that one.

Is that the best one, or is there something even easier?

Joomla is great, but this CMS may be the simpliest for an average user. Their own site is built with that very CMS, so if you want a working example, there you have one ;)

Could you expand on what you want to do? I’m a big Hawaii_Jake fan and would be willing to spend some time helping you out since I do it for a living and live in a state of perpetual boredom.

Let me know what you need and I will try to help. I like insane amounts of details. Keep in mind that if you say you want a facebook clone I will donkey punch you.

@johnpowell : I think I’m safe from the donkey punch.

I want something that has a simple back end like the current site, that has SEO capabilities which the current site does not, and has different graphics for the header which I have.

This is going to sound strange, but I like how easy it is for users to maneuver around the site presently. It’s very straightforward. I don’t need it to be fancy and complicated. The site is there for one reason and one reason only: to get people to contact me. So far, I’m getting those through a link on craiglist.org.

I know you want more detail, but perhaps it’s late and perhaps I need to sleep.

I will not touch the SEO stuff out of principle and it doesn’t really work. But a lot of people make money telling you that it does work.

If you just need help changing your header I am your guy. All I ask is that you buy a homeless person some food in exchange. I’m ready to cuddle my pillow. I will send you a pm in the morning.

@johnpowell : Thank you. That will be so much help.

Move along, people. Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along. Let the professionals do their work.

I don’t know how your current site looks, but if you want to build an easy to maintain page, a blog is usually a good starting point unless your site is too complicated for a blog structure.
This gives you search-friendly urls automatically in most cases and you usually have a template system that you can easily change.

For example i think postsecret.com is build on blogger.com and looks rather good.
