What can explain the fact that I'm alert and ready to face this day?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) September 13th, 2011

On Mondays I work a 12 hour day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Then I have to get up at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday to work a regular 8 hr day and on through the week. Needless to say, I’m am dragging and dog tired after work on Monday, with almost no time to decompress before I go to bed. I started this three weeks ago, with a Monday off for Labor day last week.

Last night I’m so tired I’m almost hurting, not only because of the 12 hours, but because just before closing I actually got sick…it was the lunch I had at 4:30. Just a burrito but for whatever reason about 7:30 it decided it wasn’t going to stay down. I kept telling myself to be in bed by 10:00 last night….but I kept putting it off and putting it off, and didn’t go to bed until after 11. That means less than 8 hrs of sleep (left to myself I can sleep 11, 12 hours easy!) I fully expected to be dragging, half dead and irritable this morning like I was the two other Mondays I worked even when I hadn’t gotten sick…but I wasn’t. My alarm went off, and woke up easily, got out of bed and faced that day feeling well rested and relaxed.

How can that be? Am I imagining things??

I don’t get that much sleep either, and sometimes I end up getting 3–4 hours and have more energy. It can only be our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ giving us the strength to go on another day to serve His Will.

Do you thin you might ahve woken up at just the right part of your sleep cycle?

I sometimes wake up at an odd hour. 3 or 4 AM and feel great. But it’s dark and cold out and I am not in the mood to really work so I go back to bed. When I wake up a couple of hours later, I feel bleah.
In the future we all will have monitors that track our sleep cycles and wake us up at the ideal time. You’ll be able to download your past 60 day sleep performance and compare it to a potential mate to check for ideal compatibility. No more difficulties with obnoxious morning people sleeping with night owls.
Job interviewers will require a download of sleep schedule as well as a resume. I can see the want ads now: Bruegger’s Bagel Bakery looking for Class II morning person for counter work. The Dakota Bar and Grill is looking for a Class 1 Night owl to tend bar.

Actually, that wouldn’t be so bad ,now that I think about it. Except for the fact that they would know every time you romped twixt the sheets On second thought…...

Oh my. I just reread my previous answer and am embarrassed by all the errors. Clearly I woke up at the wrong part of my sleep cycle.
Please forgive me Fluther.

How were you the day after that? I tried staying up to do theater tech work 3 nights in a row after a full day of work. Did fine until the 4th day when I fell asleep on my office floor. My answer: Your body lets you do what you have to do. . . just so long. I think it’s called adrenalin.

I’m sure this isn’t what is happening, but fyi—when you are bipolar and having a manic episode, you can stay up for weeks with only an hour or two of sleep a night and you never seem to feel tired.
