Is black coffee more likely to cause an upset stomach than coffee with creamer?
I normally drink my coffee with a bit of creamer, but I ran out so today I drank it black. Now I really feel like I’m going to throw up. Is that coincidental?
I drink coffee most days, and occasionally I will drink it black. I don’t see how it would be less irritating with creamer, but I’m wondering if it is as simple as that. I haven’t had more coffee today than usual, or anything obvious like that. I hope I’m not getting sick. :\

Also, please don’t read too much into this question. I’m not pregnant, I don’t need to see a doctor, etc etc. I’m just curious.
Black coffee was rougher on my stomach. I think the creamer mellows it out a bit. (You’re mighty talkative this morning.)
<Makes crazy eyes> Who me? My hands are shaking, too. I swear it wasn’t any stronger than usual, either. Haha.
It really does seem to have affected me in a way that it normally doesn’t.
@Adirondackwannabe I just ate a piece of toast with peanut butter. I’m trying to remember the last thing I actually ate before that. But, it wouldn’t be unusual for me to have a couple cups of coffee without eating breakfast.
It does that to me too.
Congratulations!! LOL
I can’t seem to find any science that would explain this, but I definitely know what you mean. It has mostly happened with lighter, more acidic roasts – and always on an empty stomach.
Ugh. It says “and” instead of “an.” I hate typos. :\
OMG!!! NEFFIE’S HAVING A PSYCHOTIC EPISODE!!!
I figured at least one wild panic response was appropriate, here.
@tom_g that sounds about right. This is supposed to be a “medium” roast, but it’s uber cheap and it tastes it, too. I really can’t remember what I ate last, so I must have been hungry.
@JilltheTooth thanks. I said nothing about not needing a frontal lobotomy. :)
Aha! (“Why Dark Coffee Is Easier on Your Stomach”)
Here’s a really bad idea: Cut the coffee with some Bailey’s Irish Cream.
I’ve always had my coffee black & as far as i’m aware i’ve never once been preggars…..thank fuck!

Ha! Nothing like getting the kids after school with a little buzz. I don’t have Bailey’s, unfortunately. Just for the record. No milk, no creamer, no Bailey’s… it’s a sad day here.
@ucme well that’s a relief. Thanks for reassuring me!
@augustlan thank you. Big xoxo’s.
Wow, I didn’t even notice it was general! Thanks for moving it, @augustlan , I would hate to have my utterly brilliant first post here be modded. XP
Just in case anyone is wondering, I am not bouncing up and down in my seat right now. I’m not.
Just so long as you’re not frowing up. Or would you feel better if you did? If that’s the case, I wish for you vomit.
No, my hands don’t usually shake. And, yes, I lied about bouncing in my seat.
My stomach feels better, I guess I just needed food. You guys are sweet, though. Never doing that again. I feel like a 5 year old that just found a whole package of pixie stix.
OK, food is a good idea. I’m gonna go get me some o’ dat, now.
I definitely notice that when I drink black my stomach hurts sometimes after if on an empty stomach and a lot of it. If you eat anything with fat and cream it will help ease the effects on your stomach because the cream lines the inside and @Adirondackwannabe got it right… mellows it out!
I say yes. In general. It’s probably more acidic, higher caffeine and no buffer, i.e. milk. Of course it would depend on the instant coffee and how you take it, but I think in general yes.
Coffee is quite acidic. If you are used to having it with cream, it could upset your stomach.
Might be nothing to do with the coffee, Just because you drank it and then felt sick doesn’t mean the two are related,
@JilltheTooth yes’m. Remarkably there was no crash. I was definitely expecting a hardcore nap this afternoon, but I feel pretty good. However, coming back to this thread made me realize that the last thing I ate was that toast.
Toast. Hmmmmm. Danger on a plate.
