What ethnic and national sterotypes have you noticed in movies recently?

Asked by 6rant6 (13710points) September 15th, 2011

Have you noticed any new trends among stereotyped characters in movies? You know, where a particular ethnic group or nationality seems to be portrayed in a certain role disproportionately?

Used to be that Puerto Ricans were often given the role of pimp or dealer. Irish were drunks, Russians were mercenaries. And there were the positive sterotypes, too. American Indians went through a stretch where they were the conscience of society, Germans were the scientists, and Ethnic Hawaiians were all happy go lucky.

So what have you seen recently?

It’s actually interesting to follow the evolution of the “national public enemy” in films. Savage black people raping innocent white girls, savage Indians killing innocent farmers, rude nazi’s, cruel Asians, hi-tech Russian spies (& co – other East European spies), barbarian Arabs and recently (starting with “Seven”), the cultivated, sophisticated, decadent Europeans vs. the Good American Cowboys who read Reader’s Digest…
