Fans perspective would you rather a band you are following tell you about a name change or just do it and have the fan be surprised?

Let’s say you are really into a band, and they all of a sudden change their name. Would you be pleasant to have it announced first? Or to have it been just done and you figure it out on your own?

I think I’d be a little bit irritated to find out (after missing several shows because I couldn’t find them) that their name had changed.
