Would the PLO ( Palestininan Liberation Organization ) joining the UN advance peace in the Middle East?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29195points) September 16th, 2011

It seems the PLO is making an attempt to join the UN. According to some sources, the US will veto it but UN rules might give them “Observer” status, which means they could bring cases of alleged war crimes against Israel in the International Criminal Courts.

I wish them the best of luck, and I think it’s unconscionable that the United States is planning to veto them.

Edit: yes, it will advance the peace process. Israel has all the power despite almost universal condemnation of their apartheid state. With all the power, Israel—or at least Netanyahu—has never shown any interest in ending the occupation or curtailing its settlers’ activities.

Letting the PLO join the international community will give them leverage that they cannot achieve (and have consistently failed to achieve) through violence.

Theoretically, yes. But I’ll wait and see before casting a vote.

No, as long as they allow terrorists to fire rockets from Palestinian controlled areas into israel there will be no change.

@WestRiverrat Abbas doesn’t truck with Hamas terrorists; you may recall that brief civil war they fought? And there have been very few (if any?) rocket attacks from the West Bank in recent years.

The US is a book boot lackey to Israel, whatever Israel say do, the US can’t jump to it quick enough. The US tries to cozy up to the Saudis, who had most of the 9/11 hijackers to boot, along with some of the worlds worse civil rights violations; but they are the gas tank, so we can look the other way, and tell then we got their back., all the while handing the knife to the Israelis. Then we try to tell them that they are OK so long as they are our cheap gasoline friends. The US will do what it can to keep the PLO, Hamas, and any other Arab governmental body it can’t control, sway, or intimidate out of the EU, NATO, UN, or any or the so-called, ‘A’ clubs. The talk about getting the world united is just talk-outside-the-neck rhetoric by the US, they only want to unite if all nations do as the US wants.

Dumbshits will keep fighting if given an excuse. This will just make Palestinian fighters official.

As long as the PLO affirms the right of Israel to exist.
