Can you help name this old dos game?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21685points) September 16th, 2011

I’m trying to recall the name of an old game I used to play. It was a DOS game, based in space, it was a graphical adventure, and I believe it was popular enough to have sequels made.

Space Quest featured the adventures of Roger Wilco, space janitor. I played 4 or 5 versions with my son in the early 90s. Designed by Roberta Williams & published by Sierra On-Line.

Sierra was planning to produce Space Quest VII: Return To Roman Numerals, but produced something called Grim Fandango in the meantime (some say Grim Fandango was a good game, but the only advertising for Grim Fandango I recall showed some blocky looking character with a crude face drawn on the block’s head and very little description of what the game was actually about).

Sales of their crappy Grim Fandango game were “disappointing,” so Sierra decided to spite themselves and also punish their Space Quest fans at the same time by cancelling Space Quest VII.

There have been attempts by fans to write their own indy versions of Space Quest sequels, and some are available for download.

Wasn’t Grim Fandango the one with characters wearing death masks? (I mean like Halloween masks of skulls.) I used to see my son playing it and thought the main character was a cigarette.

Yeah, something like that. They looked like their faces were skulls.
