With whom would you spend One More Day?

Asked by Ela (6503points) September 16th, 2011

For One More Day

Awhile ago I read the book “for one more day” by Mitch Albom (author of “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”). I love books and have hundreds I haven’t read… yet I continue to browse used book stores and pick up more. Such was the case with this book. It’s an easy read, few hours max. The story is of a man and his mother, who had been dead for years. He spends the day with her reflecting back on different times throughout his life. It touched on a lot things for me and I can’t help but think of my own mother, who I lost over 30 years ago. I would love to have one more day with her.

If you could have one day with someone you’ve lost…
whom would that someone be?

I would warn my buddy in high-school to not drink and drive. On a lonely highway in the middle of farmland he was killed when his car went off the road and flipped over. His friend in the passenger seat wore a halo around his head due to a broken neck for weeks.

I would spend one day convincing him it was a bad idea.

I’d love to have a day with my grandfather. He died when I was 18. There has been so much that has happened in my life since then and I would love to share all of it with him.

My great-aunt Theresa. If I ever have a daughter I want to name her after my great-aunt…don’t tell my grandmother though! They were jealous sisters all through their long lives.

My grandfather. I wrote him a letter a few days before he died he wasn’t able to get in time to read. We both understood he wouldn’t live forever and I knew it was his time to go soon but I wanted him to have some last words of love.

I would spend it with my mom.

That would be my grandmother for me.
She was really the only one who understood me complete and although we differed fifty years, we were equals, and in a way soul mates.
Gosh, she was a good woman…

My dad.

We would spend the day watching the Muppet Show and episodes of M*A*S*H. We would eat lobster and scallops and listen to blues or jazz while we looked out on the ocean. And I would miss him just a little bit less.

I’d like to say Nick… It used to be only us. No one could tell us what to do. No one could stop us. We were in love… I wish I could have one more day of that.
I’d also like to say Asher. He shouldn’t have died…

My precious daughter.

My sainted grandmother. If we could choose more than one person, I would love to spend one more day with my father, one more day with my grandfather, one more day with a young man I helped to raise who was just killed in a car accident, and several of my Army brothers who were killed in Vietnam.

That would be my father. He’s been gone for 28 years. There was so much I didn’t understand then that I’ve learned since and that I would love to share with him; I think we’d be much closer now. And there’s so much I would ask him, things I didn’t think about or didn’t take the time for back then.

I’ve also come to see many things more charitably than I did when I was a young woman. There were ways in which I was too hard on him, not seeing that he was just an ordinary mortal with very normal traits and flaws.

My first son, his first grandson, was born six months after his death. He’d have been very proud of this boy and young man. I’d like to give him that joy as well.
