I did the “cmd” in the search bar at the start menu. Then I did “ipconfig”
Then I get “Windows IP Configuration” screen. There are 4 lines with numbers on them. Which line do I use for my IP?
The lines are as follows:
Link – local IPv6 address
IPv4 address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Numbers are after each line.

IP address is set by you ISP. Some ISP’s change it every time you connect to the net while others will allocate you the same address.
IP addresses cover both your local area network address as well as the wide area network address supplied by the ISP.
If you want your local address, it is the IPv4 line.
If you want your WAN address, use lighty’s link.
Alternatively, if you are connected to the internet via a router, log into that one and look around.
If you are using Linux, run “ifconfig”. If you are using Windows, “ipconfig”. To see your public IP, you can navigate to many sites, such as this one.
To avoid getting into a long and drawn out explanation of networking, subnets, routers, gateways, proxies, IP v4 versus v6, etc…
Can you tell us why you need your IP address? That will help us help you determine the best answer.
Assuming Windows 7 :
Run the command line: ipconfig
IPv4 Address is your laptops local IP Address so it should be by default 192.168.0.X ( X is what order you got connected to the router/modem. The first 0 can be different depending on router/modem)
For the ip address of your modem the little box that connects all to the interwebs go to this link http://www.whatsmyip.org/
