Can anyone help me figure out my math problem?
I think I figured it out but I was wondering if someone could break it down to compare to my answer. (9–2x) (5–2x) – 45 = 24 . I have to figure out the factor for x

Hmm
(9–2x) (5–2x) – 45
(7x) (3x) – 45
21 – 45x
= -24
looks right but its been a while, you just got it positve.
I think you have to foil, combine like terms, subtract then divide out…
Yeah the whole point is getting the X to the other side.
Now to use it in it in a word problem; a landscape architect has included a rectangler flower bed measures 9 feet by 5 feet in her plans for a new building. She wants to use two colors of flowers in the bed. One in the center and the other for a border of the same width on all four sides. If she can get just enough plants cover 24 square feet for the border how wide can the border be?
@XOIIO you can’t take 9 and subtract 2x from it. They aren’t like terms
x=24/32
then simplify more
Bah whatever, I said its been a while.
It’s okay thanks both of you
(9 – 2x)(5 – 2x) – 45 = 24
then foil
45 – 10x – 18x + 4x^2 – 45 = 24
the 45s cancel
4x^2 – 28x = 24
bring the 24 over
4x^2 – 28x – 24 = 0
then use the quadratic formula
I would solve like this,
(9–2x) (5–2x) – 45 = 24
45–18x-10x+4×2–45=24
4×2–28x-24=0
x2–7x-6=0

Now, we need to solve this quadratic equation and which will have two roots.
x= [- b(+or-) sqrt(b2–4ac)]/2a
b=-7, a=1 and c=-6
Put these in the above formula.
x=[- (-7) (+ or – ) (sqrt((-7)2–4(1)(-6)]/2*1
Solving this equation you will get
x=7.77 or x=-0.725
Put these in your equation, you will find answer 23.94, which is approximately equal to 24.
(9 – 2*x)*(5 – 2*x) – 45 = 24
(9 – 2*x)*5 – (9 – 2*x)*2*x – 45 = 24
45 – 10*x – (18*x – 4*x^2) – 45 = 24
4*x^2 – 28*x = 24
x^2 – 7*x = 6
x^2 – 7*x + 49/4 = 6 + 49/4
(x – 7/2)^2 = 73/4
x – 7/2 = +/- sqrt(73/4)
x = 7/2 +/- sqrt(73)/2
x = (7 +/- sqrt(73))/2
