While having a Master’s degree is preferred, you can actually work as a social worker or case worker with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

In the US you can’t do much with a BS, you really need the Masters in most states to be able to interact with patients in a clinical setting. MSW’s can do therapy, work for Social Services for the state, can be counselors at schools, can coordinate at home health care, many different possibilities.

The office next to me has several self employed counselors. They see a lot of families. I think they’re LCSWs.

My mother has her MSW. She has worked as a social worker in foster care prevention (in client’s homes), in schools and in hospitals (mostly in pediatrics). She currently has her own private practice where she is able to diagnose patients, provide therapy and bill insurance. She has also looked into working for the Veterans Administration.

I second @JLeslie‘s comments about limited options for BSWs. The people I know with their BSW have been quickly burnt-out at work and have changed careers (plus their pay was very low).

My nephew took his BS in Social Work to a major corporation to become a Human Resources specialist. He works for a company with operations all over the world, so he has been stationed in China, Abu Dhabi, and Montreal, while rotating home to Houston.

Both LCSW’s & MSW’s are in high demand for work in Autism & Asperger’s @Jude.
